Halloween Pocket Scarf
Crochet Halloween Scarf Pattern by Underground Crafter
This easy crochet Halloween scarf pattern is available in child and adult sizes. Use Halloween colors and embellish with a black cat and a jack o’lantern! This is the first pattern in the 8th Annual Halloween Crochet Along with CAL Central Crochet.
Finished Sizes
- Child (Adult). Photographed sample is size Child.
- Child: 4.25″ (11 cm) wide x 44″ (112 cm) long after seaming pockets.
- Teen/Adult: 8″ (20.5 cm) wide x 60″ (152.5 cm) long after seaming pockets.
Materials
- Big Twist Value yarn (100% acrylic, 6 oz/170 g, 380 yd/347 m) – 1 skein each in Varsity Orange (CA), Black (CB), and Chocolate Brown (CC), or approximately 155 yd (190 yd)/142 m (174 m) each in CA and CB, and 5 yd (4.5 m) in CC in any medium weight acrylic yarn.
- US Size H-8/5 mm crochet hook, or any size needed to obtain correct gauge.
- Locking stitch markers.
- Yarn needle.
- I used the MECHEER crochet hook set with 12 hooks, yarn needles, locking stitch markers, and more.
Gauge
- 16 hdc = 4.25” (11 cm) across. Exact gauge is not critical for this pattern.
Abbreviations Used in This Pattern
- CA – Color A
- CB – Color B
- CC – Color C
- ch – chain
- hdc – half double crochet
- rep – repeat
- Rnd(s) – Round(s)
- sc – single crochet
- sc2tog – single crochet 2 stitches together (decrease) – [Insert hook in next st, yo and draw up a loop] twice, yo and draw through all 3 loops on hook. A helpful video for this decrease is available below.

Pattern Instructions
Scarf
- With CA, ch 17 (31).
- Row 1: Turn, skip 1 ch, hdc in next 16 (30) ch. — 16 (30) sts
- Row 2: Turn, ch 1, hdc in first st and each st across.
- Rep Row 2 until scarf measures approximately 26″ (66″)/66 cm (167.5 cm) long, or approximately half of desired length plus an additional 4″ (6″)/10 cm (15 cm) long.
- Fasten off CA with approximately 24″ (36″)/61 cm (91.5 cm) long yarn tail for seaming.
- Next Row: Join CB with sl st to underside of foundation chain, ch 1, hdc in same st and each st across. — 16 (30) sts
- Rep Row 2 until second side of scarf is same length as first side, or until entire scarf measures 52″ (132″)/132 cm (335.5 cm).
- Fasten off CB with approximately 24″ (36″)/61 cm (91.5 cm) long yarn tail for seaming.
- With yarn needle, weave in yarn tails from foundation chain and Next Row.
Jack O’Lantern
Pumpkin
- With CA, start with the magic adjustable ring (see Pattern Notes).
- Rnd 1: Ch 1, 6 sc in ring, tighten magic ring to close, pm in last st to mark position, move marker up each rnd. (6 sts)
- Rnd 2: 2 sc in each st around. (12 sts)
- Rnd 3: [2 sc in next st, sc in next st] around. (18 sts)
- Rnd 4: [2 sc in next st, sc in next 2 sts] around. (24 sts)
- Rnd 5: [2 sc in next st, sc in next 3 sts] around. (30 sts)
- Rnd 6: [2 sc in next st, sc in next 4 sts] around. (36 sts)
- Rnd 7: [Sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc in next 2 sts] around. (42 sts)
- Fasten off CA with long yarn tail, approximately 18″ (46 cm) for seaming.
Stem
- Row 1: Join CC with sl st to any st on Rnd 7, ch 1, sc in same st and next 2 sts. (3 sts)
- Row 2: Turn, ch 1, sc in first 3 sts.
- Row 3: Rep Row 2 once.
- Fasten off CC with long yarn tail, approximately 12″ (30.5 cm) for seaming.
- With yarn needle, weave in yarn tail from magic ring and start of stem onto back of Pumpkin.
Embellish Face
- Thread yarn needle with approximately 12″ (30.5 cm) in CB. Embellish face with embroidery back stitch (see Pattern Notes) as desired. Weave in yarn tails from embellishment or knot securely on back.
Black Cat
- With CB, start with the magic adjustable ring (see Pattern Notes).
- Rep Rnds 1-7 as for Jack O’Lantern, do note fasten off CB.
First Ear
- Rnd 8: Sc in next 4 sts, skip 38 sts. (4 sts)
- Row 1: Turn, ch 1, sc2tog in first 2 sts, sc in next 2 sts. (3 sts)
- Row 2: Turn, ch 1, sc2tog in first 2 sts, sc in next st. (2 sts)
- Row 3: Turn, ch 1, sc2tog in first 2 sts. (1 st)
- Fasten off CB with long yarn tail, approximately 18″ (46 cm) for seaming.
Second Ear
- Next Row: Skip 3 sts after end of First Ear, join CB to next st on Rnd 8, ch 1, sc in same st and next 3 sts. (4 sts)
- Rep Rows 1-3 as for First Ear.
- Fasten off CB.
- With yarn needle, weave in yarn tail from magic ring, and start and end of Second Ear onto back of Black Cat.
Embellish Face
- Thread yarn needle with approximately 12″ (30.5 cm) in CA. Embellish face with embroidery back stitch (see Pattern Notes) as desired. Weave in yarn tails from embellishment or knot securely on back.
Assemble Scarf
- Mark Pockets at each end of scarf approximately 4″ (6″)/10 cm (15 cm) from each end.
- Position Jack O’Lantern and Black Cat so that they will be right side up when Pockets are folded over. Use locking stitch markers to pin in position.
- Starting with Black Cat, thread yarn needle with CB from end of First Ear. Sew or whipstitch seam (see Pattern Notes) Black Cat to Scarf. When finished, weave in yarn tail on back/inside of pocket.
- Before seaming Jack O’Lantern, double check that it is positioned on the same (right/front side) as the Black Cat. Thread yarn needle with CA from end of Pumpkin, sew or whipstitch seam Pumpkin to Scarf, skipping the stitches behind the stem. When finished, weave in yarn tail on back/inside of pocket. Thread yarn needle with CC from end of Stem, sew or whipstitch seam Stem to Scarf. When finished, weave in yarn tail on back/inside of pocket.
- Fold Pocket over at stitch marker. Thread yarn needle with long yarn tail from end of this half of scarf. Lining up rows on each side of Pocket, seam with whipstitch on first side. Weave yarn tail across pocket at bottom (folded) edge, seam with whipstitch across second side. With yarn needle, weave in yarn tails on inside of Pocket.
- Repeat for second Pocket.
Tips for Variations
- One Color: Make the entire scarf in one color such as Halloween inspired green, purple, or white.
- Stripes: Make the scarf in one piece with stripes. Start with 4″ (6″)/10 cm (15 cm) in one color for the first Pocket and end with 4″ (6″)/10 cm (15 cm) in one color for the second Pocket. Change colors every 2 rows throughout the rest of the scarf.
- More Embellished: Make More Black Cats and/or Jack O’Lanterns and sew or whipstitch them throughout the scarf. Keep them on one side or make the scarf reversible by including them on both sides.
