Finished Size

  • Teen/Adult: 4” (10 cm) wide x 54” (137 cm) long (unblocked).

Materials

  • Lion Brand Heartland (100% acrylic, 5 oz/142 g, 251 yd/230 m) – 1 skeins ea in 174 Joshua Tree (CA) and 169 Shenandoah (CB), or approximately 175 yd (160 m) in ea of 2 contrasting colors in any medium weight yarn.

  • US J-10/6 mm crochet hook, or any size needed to obtain gauge.
  • Yarn needle.
  • Optional: 2 locking stitch markers.

Gauge

  • 17 sts x 8 rows (1A & 1B) in Staircase Stitch = 4” (10 cm) across. Exact gauge is not critical for this pattern.

Abbreviations Used in This Pattern

  • CA – Color A
  • CB – Color B
  • ch – chain
  • dc – double crochet
  • dc/b – double crochet in back of ch-1 sp of alternate color piece
  • dc/f – double crochet in front of ch-1 sp of alternate color piece
  • ea – each
  • rep – repeat
  • RS – right (front) side
  • sc – single crochet
  • sk – skip
  • sl st – slip st
  • sp – space
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • * Rep instructions after asterisk as indicated.

  • Turn, drop CB yarn to back of project.
  • Row 13A: With CA, ch 4, dc/f in next st, *ch 1, sk 1 st, dc/f in next st; rep from * across, drop CA and do not turn.
  • Row 13B: With CB, ch 4, dc/f in next st, (ch 1, sk 1 st, dc/b in next st, ch 1, sk 1 st, dc/f in next st) 3 times.
  • Turn, drop CB yarn to front of project.
  • Row 14A: With CA, ch 4, dc/b, *ch 1, sk 1 st, dc/b in next st; rep from * across, drop CA and do not turn.
  • Row 14B: With CB, ch 4, dc/b in next st, (ch 1, sk 1 st, dc/f in next st, ch 1, sk 1 st, dc/b in next st) 3 times.
  • Rep Rows 13-14 until piece measures approximately 8.5” (22 cm) from previous set of Divider Rows, ending after Row 14B.
  • Rep Divider Rows 3-4 once. Fasten off CB.

Assembly

Turn with wrong sides facing and join open short edges as follows: With CA, ch 1, sc through both CA layers, *sc through next st of all layers (CA ch-1 sp and CB dc), sc through next st of both layers (CA dc and CB ch-1 sp); rep from * across to last 2 sts, sc through next st of all layers (CA ch-1 sp and CB dc), sc in last CA dc of both layers. Fasten off.

Finishing

Weave in ends with yarn needle. Spray block if necessary. (If you’re not familiar with blocking, read Blocking Basics for Crocheters and Knitters.)
