Welcoming Blanket 4: Bernadette Floral Granny Square
Crochet Pattern by Underground Crafter


Bernadette is the fourth floral granny square in the Welcoming Blanket, a mystery crochet along for a 40″ x 40″ throw blanket made up of nine 12” floral granny square patterns with borders. The Bernadette pattern has a 2-color gerbera flower at the center which is similar to the one used in the Gerbera – 6” Square premium pattern.
Finished Size
- 12” (30.5 cm) square.
Materials for the Welcoming Blanket
- Caron One Pound (available at Mary Maxim | Amazon) yarn (100% acrylic, 16 oz/454 g/812 yd/742 m) – 1 skein each in 02005 Sun Yellow (CA), 10517 Rose (CB), and 10620 Grass Green (CC), or approximately 812 yd/742 m in each of 3 medium weight yarns.
- The Bernadette Floral Granny Square uses approximately 60 yd (55 m) in CA, 75 yd (68.5 m) in CB, and 50 yd (46 m) in CC in any medium weight yarn.
- Clover Amour (available at WeCrochet | Amazon) US Size J-10/6 mm crochet hook, or size needed to obtain gauge.
- Yarn needle.
Gauge
- Motif = 12” (30.5 cm) square. Exact gauge is not critical for this project.
Abbreviations Used in This Pattern
- BL – back loop only – Moogly has a helpful video tutorial for identifying the back loop in crochet here.
- bob – 3-repeat bobble – [Yo, insert hook into st, yo and draw up a loop, yo and draw through 2 loops] 3 times in the same st, yo and draw through all 4 loops on hook. A helpful video tutorial for this stitch is available below.

- FPsc – front post single crochet – Insert hook from front around back to front of st in previous round, yo and draw up a loop, yo and draw through 2 loops. A helpful video tutorial for this stitch is available below.

Pattern Notes
- Ch 1 at start and sl st at end of Rounds DO NOT count as stitches.
- There are many ways to crochet into chain spaces. I used the first method shown in the video below in this pattern.

Motif
- With CA, ch 4, skip first 3 ch, join with sl st to next ch to form ring.
- Rnd 1: (WS) Ch 1, [(bob, ch 1) in ring] 8 times, join with sl st to first bob. (16 sts)

- Rnd 2: Turn to RS, ch 1, starting in same ch-1 sp [sc in next ch-1 sp, FPsc around next bob] around. join with sl st to first sc.

- Rnd 3: (RS) Ch 1, starting in same st [2 sc in next st, sc in next st] around, join with sl st to first sc, fasten off CA. (24 sts)

- Rnd 4: Join CB on RS with slstFL to any st, starting in same st [(ch 6, turn, skip first ch, sl st in next 5 ch), slstFL in next st on Rnd 3, (ch 8, turn, skip first ch, sl st in next 7 ch), slstFL in next st on Rnd 3] around, ending with slstFL to first petal, fasten off CB. (24 petals + 24 sts)

- Rnd 5: Join CC on RS with slstBL to any st on Rnd 3, ch 1, working behind petals and starting in same st, [2 dcBL in next st, dcBL in next st] around, join with sl st to first dc. (36 sts)

- Rnd 6: (RS) Ch 1, starting in same st [2 dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts] around, join with sl st to first dc. (48 sts)

- Rnd 7: (RS) Ch 1, 2 dc in same st, *dc in next st, hdc in next 2 sts, sc in next 5 sts, hdc in next 2 sts, dc in next st,** (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next st; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, 2 dc in first st, ch 1, join with sc (counts as second ch in ch-2 sp) to first dc. (15 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)

- Rnd 8: (RS) Ch 1, 2 dc in same sp, *dc in next 15 sts,** (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, 2 dc in first sp, ch 2, join with sl st first dc, fasten off CC. (19 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)

- Rnd 9: Join CA on RS with sl st to any corner ch-2 sp, ch 1, 2 dc in same ch-2 sp, *sc in next st, [skip 2 sts, (dc, hdc, sc) in next st] 6 times,** (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, 2 dc in first sp, ch 2, join with sl st to first dc, fasten off CA. (23 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)

- Rnd 10: Join CB on RS with sl st to any corner ch-2 sp, ch 1, 2 dc in same ch-2 sp, *sc in next st, [skip 2 sts, (dc, hdc, sc) in next st] 7 times, skip 1 st,** (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, 2 dc in first sp, ch 2, join with sl st to first dc, fasten off CB. (26 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)

- Rnd 11 Join CA on RS with sl st to any corner ch-2 sp, ch 1, dc in same ch-2 sp, *sc in next st, [skip 2 sts, (dc, hdc, sc) in next st] 8 times, skip 1 st,** (dc, ch 2, dc) in next ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, dc in first sp, ch 2, join with sl st to first dc, fasten off CA. (27 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)

- Rnd 12: Join CC on RS with sl st to any corner ch-2 sp, ch 1, sc in same ch-2 sp, *sc in next 27 sts,** (sc, ch 2, sc) in next ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, sc in first sp, ch 2, join with sl st to first sc, fasten off CC. (29 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)

- Rnd 14: Join CB on RS with sl st to any corner ch-2 sp, ch 1, sc in same sp, *scBL in next 31 sts,** (sc, ch 2, sc) in next ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, sc in first ch-2 sp, ch 2, join with sl st to first sc. (33 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)

- Rnd 15: (RS) Ch 1, starting in same st *sc in next st, [tr in next st, sc in next st] across, (sc, ch 2, sc) in next ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, join with sl st to first sc. (35 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)

- Rnd 16: (RS) Ch 1, starting in same st *sc in next 2 sts, [FPsc around next tr while pushing tr towards RS, sc in next st] across to last st, sc in next st, (sc, ch 2, sc) in next ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, join with sl st to first sc, fasten off CB. (37 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)
Finishing
- With yarn needle, weave in yarn tails on WS of square.
