Welcoming Blanket 3: Ilona Floral Granny Square
Crochet Pattern by Underground Crafter


Ilona is the third floral granny square in the Welcoming Blanket, a mystery crochet along for a 40″ x 40″ throw blanket made up of nine 12” floral granny square patterns with borders. The Ilona pattern has an 8-petal flower at the center which is similar to the Stop and Smell the Flowers Granny Square.
Finished Size
- 12” (30.5 cm) square.
Materials for the Welcoming Blanket
- Caron One Pound (available at Mary Maxim | Amazon) yarn (100% acrylic, 16 oz/454 g/812 yd/742 m) – 1 skein each in 02005 Sun Yellow (CA), 10517 Rose (CB), and 10620 Grass Green (CC), or approximately 812 yd/742 m in each of 3 medium weight yarns.
- The Ilona Floral Granny Square uses approximately 60 yd (55 m) in CA, 55 yd (50.5 m) in CB, and 30 yd (27.5 m) in CC in any medium weight yarn.
- Clover Amour (available at WeCrochet | Amazon) US Size J-10/6 mm crochet hook, or size needed to obtain gauge.
- Yarn needle.
Gauge
- Through Rnd 8 in pattern = 6.25” (16 cm) square. Exact gauge is not critical for this project.
Abbreviations Used in This Pattern
- 3L – third (back) loop only – A helpful video tutorial for identifying the third loop in crochet is available below.

- CB – Color B
- CC – Color C
- ch – chain
- dc – double crochet
- dc2tog – double crochet 2 stitches together (decrease) – Yo, insert hook in next st, yo and draw up a loop, yo and draw through 2 loops] twice, yo and draw through all 3 loops on hook. A helpful photo tutorial for this stitch is available here.
- FPdc – front post double crochet – Yo, insert hook from front around back to front of st in previous row, yo and draw up a loop, [yo and draw through 2 loops] twice. A helpful video tutorial for this stitch is available below.

Pattern Notes
- Entire project is crocheted in the round with the right (front) side facing up.
- Ch 1 at start and sl st at end of Rounds DO NOT count as stitches.
- There are many ways to crochet into chain spaces. I used the first method shown in the video below in this pattern.

Pattern Instructions
Motif
- With CB, ch 4, skip first 3 ch, join with sl st to next ch to form ring.
- Round 1: Ch 1, 16 dc in ring, join with sl st to first dc. (16 sts)

- Round 2: Ch 1, starting in same st [FPdc around next st, 3 dc in next st] 8 times, join with sl st to first FPdc. (32 sts/8 petals)

- Round 3: Ch 1, starting in same st [FPdc around next FPdc, dc in next st, 2 dc in next st, dc in next st] 8 times, join with sl st to first FPdc. (40 sts/8 petals)

- Round 4: Sl st in first 2 sts, ch 1, starting in same st [3 dc in next 2 sts, skip 1 st, sl st in next FPdc, skip 1 st] 8 times, join with sl st to first st, fasten off CB. (56 sts/8 petals)

- Round 5: Join CC to any sl st over FPdc on Rnd 4 with sl st, working behind petals [ch 4, skip 6 sts, sl st in next st] 8 times, join with sl st to first ch-4 sp. (8 ch-4 sp + 8 sl st)

- Round 6: Ch 1, 6 dc in each ch-4 sp, join with sl st to first dc. (48 sts)

- Round 7: Ch 1, 2 dc in same st, *dc in next st, hdc in next 2 sts, sc in next 5 sts, hdc in next 2 sts, dc in next st,** (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next st; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, 2 dc in first st, ch 1, join with sc (counts as second ch in ch-2 sp) to first dc. (15 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)

- Round 8: Ch 1, 2 dc in same sp, *dc in next 15 sts,** (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, 2 dc in first sp, ch 2, join with sl st first dc, fasten off CC. (19 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)

- Round 9: Join CA with sl st to any corner ch-2 sp, ch 1, 2 dc in same ch-2 sp, *[dc in next st, dc2tog in same and next st] across to last st, dc in next st,** (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, 2 dc in first sp, ch 1, join with sc (counts as second ch in ch-2 sp) to first dc. (23 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)

- Round 10: Ch 1, 2 dc in same ch-2 sp, *[dc2tog in next 2 sts, dc in same st as second part of dc2tog] across to last st, dc2tog in previous st and next st,** (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, 2 dc in first sp, ch 2, join with sl st to first dc, fasten off CA. (27 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)

- Round 11: Join CB with sl st to any corner ch-2 sp, ch 1, sc in same sp, *scBL in next 27 sts,** (sc, ch 2, sc) in next ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, sc in first ch-2 sp, ch 2, join with sl st to first sc. (29 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)

- Round 12: Ch 1, starting in same st, *hdcBL in next 29 sts, (hdc, ch 2, hdc) in next ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, join with slst3L to first hdc. (31 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)
- Round 13: Ch 1, starting in same st *sc3L in next 31 sts,** (sc, ch 2, sc) in next ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, join with sl st to first sc, fasten off CB. (33 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)

- Round 14: Join CA with sl st to any corner ch-2 sp, ch 1, dc in same sp, *[dc in next st, ch 1, skip 1 st] across to last st, dc in next st,** (dc, ch 2, dc) in next ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, dc in first ch-2 sp, ch 2, join with sl st to first dc, fasten off CA. (35 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)

- Round 15: Join CB with sl st to any corner ch-2 sp, ch 1, hdc in same sp, *hdcBL in next 2 sts, [working over ch-1 sp and drawing loop up to height of current row, dc in skipped st on Round 13, hdcBL in next st] across to last st, hdcBL in next st,** (hdc, ch 2, hdc) in ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, hdc in first ch-2sp, ch 2, join with sl st to first hdc, fasten off CB. Finishing
- With yarn needle, weave in yarn tails on wrong (back) side of square.
