Welcoming Blanket 7: Julia Floral Granny Square
Crochet Pattern by Underground Crafter


Julia is the seventh floral granny square in the Welcoming Blanket, a mystery crochet along for a 40″ x 40″ throw blanket made up of nine 12” floral granny square patterns with borders. The Julia pattern has a 6-petal flower at the center which is inspired by the petals on the April Daisy Square by Margaret Hubert.
Finished Size
- 12” (30.5 cm) square.
Materials for the Welcoming Blanket
- Caron One Pound (available at Mary Maxim | Amazon) yarn (100% acrylic, 16 oz/454 g/812 yd/742 m) – 1 skein each in 02005 Sun Yellow (CA), 10517 Rose (CB), and 10620 Grass Green (CC), or approximately 812 yd/742 m in each of 3 medium weight yarns.
- The Julia Floral Granny Square uses approximately 80 yd (73 m) in CA, 45 yd (41 m) in CB, and 35 yd (32 m) in CC in any medium weight yarn.
- Clover Amour (available at WeCrochet | Amazon) US Size J-10/6 mm crochet hook, or size needed to obtain gauge.
- Yarn needle.
Gauge
- Motif = 12” (30.5 cm) square. Exact gauge is not critical for this project.
Abbreviations Used in This Pattern
- CA – Color A
- CB – Color B
- CC – Color C
- ch – chain
- dc – double crochet
- dc2tog – double crochet 2 stitches together (decrease) – Yo, insert hook in next st, yo and draw up a loop, yo and draw through 2 loops] twice, yo and draw through all 3 loops on hook. A helpful photo tutorial for this stitch is available here.
- hdc – half double crochet
- hdc2tog – half double crochet 2 stitches together (decrease) – hdc2tog = half double crochet 2 stitches together (decrease) = [Yo, insert hook in next st, yo and draw up a loop] twice, yo and draw through all 5 loops on hook. A helpful video tutorial for the hdc2tog is available below.

Pattern Notes
- Ch 1 at start and sl st at end of Rounds DO NOT count as stitches.
- There are many ways to crochet into chain spaces. I used the first method shown in the video below in this pattern.

- Entire square is crocheted with the right (front) side facing up.
Pattern Instructions
Motif
- With CA, ch 4, skip first 3 ch, join with sl st to next ch to form ring.
- Rnd 1: Ch 1, 12 dc in ring, join with sl st to first dc, fasten off CA. (12 sts)

- Rnd 2: Join CB with sl st to any st on Rnd 1, ch 1, starting in same st [sc in next st, ch 2, (dc, tr, ch 3, tr, dc) in next st, ch 2] across, join with sl st to first sc, fasten off CB. (6 petals/30 sts + 12 ch-2 sp + 6 ch-3 sp)

- Rnd 3: Join CC with sl st to any sc between petals on Rnd 2, ch 1, starting in same st and working behind petals [sc in next sc, ch 4] 6 times, join with sl st to first ch-4 sp. (6 sts + 6 ch-4 sp)

- Rnd 4: Ch 1, starting in first ch-4 sp [6 dc in next ch-4 sp, skip next sc] around, join with sl st to first dc. (36 sts)

- Rnd 5: Ch 1, starting in same st [2 dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts] around, join with sl st to first dc. (48 sts)

- Rnd 6: Ch 1, 2 dc in same st, *dc in next st, hdc in next 2 sts, sc in next 5 sts, hdc in next 2 sts, dc in next st,** (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next st; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, 2 dc in first st, ch 1, join with sc (counts as second ch in ch-2 sp) to first dc. (15 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)

- Rnd 7: Ch 1, 2 dc in same sp, *dc in next 15 sts,** (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, 2 dc in first sp, ch 2, join with sl st first dc, fasten off CC. (19 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)

- Rnd 8: Join CB with sl st to any corner ch-2 sp, ch 1, 2 dc in same sp, *sc in next st, [skip 2 sts, 5 dc in next st, skip 2 sts, sc in next st] across to ch-2 sp,** (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, 2 dc in first ch-2 sp, ch 2, join with sl st to first dc, fasten off CB. (23 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)

- Rnd 9: Join CA with sl st to any corner ch-2 sp, ch 1, dc in same sp, *sc in next st, skip 1 st, [5 dc in next st, skip 2 sts, sc in next st, skip 2 sts] across to last 3 sts, 5 dc in next sc, skip 1 st, sc in next st,** (dc, ch 2, dc) in next ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, dc in first ch-2 sp, ch 2, join with sl st to first dc, fasten off CA. (27 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)

- Rnd 10: Join CB with sl st to any corner ch-2 sp, ch 1, 2 dc in same ch-2 sp, *skip 1 st, [5 dc in next sc, skip 2 sts, sc in next dc, skip 2 sts] across to last 2 sts, 5 dc in next sc, skip 1 st;** (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, 2 dc in first sp, ch 2, join with sl st to first dc, fasten off CB. (33 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)

- Rnd 11: Join CA with sl st to st after any corner ch-2 sp, ch 1, starting in same st *sc in next st, hdc in next 3 sts, [sc in next st, hdc in next 2 sts, dc in next st, hdc in next 2 sts] across to last 5 sts, sc in next st, hdc in next 3 sts, sc in next st, ch 2, skip ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, join with sl st to first sc.

- Rnd 12: Ch 1, starting in same st *[dc in next st, dc2tog, ch 1] across to ch-2 sp, (dc, ch 2, dc) in next ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, join with sl st to first dc. (35 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)

- Rnd 13: Ch 1, starting in same st [hdc2tog, 2 hdc in ch-1 sp] across to last st before ch-2 sp, hdc in next st, (hdc, ch 2, hdc) in next ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, hdc in next st, join with sl st to first hdc, fasten off CA. (37 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)
Finishing
- With yarn needle, weave in yarn tails on Wrong Side of square.
