This pattern is part of Yarnsgiving, a new tradition that runs from I Love Yarn Day on the third Saturday in October through Giving Tuesday on the first Tuesday in December. Yarnsgiving is all about making with yarn and giving to others. You can find out more about Yarnsgiving and get free crochet and knitting patterns here.

When I think about gifting or donating projects made with yarn, I usually focus on simpler projects that I can finish in a short time and while doing the other things of life (such as commuting, watching tv, or talking on the phone). That’s why when I was thinking about what to design for Yarnsgiving, I decided to focus on a beginner friendly, knit flat pattern that was available in many sizes. As I mentioned in yesterday’s post, my family had a “silly hat” tradition at the holidays, where we would make impromptu “hats” from gift wrap or decorations. Thanksgiving is a holiday when many folks get together with family and friends (either in person or virtually), and it seemed the perfect occasion for a silly hat! I used four colors in Lion Brand Hometown yarn (available at Lion Brand | LoveCrafts | Amazon) – a super bulky (super chunky/#6) weight yarn in vibrant, place-inspired colors – for my version and topped the finished hat with two plush pom poms made with a Clover Pom Pom Maker (available at Lion Brand | WeCrochet | Amazon).

I hope you’ll enjoy wearing or gifting your knit-flat turkey hat pattern as much as I enjoyed designing it!
