Bucket hats are a classic look that seem to never go out of style. The Marinera Bucket Hat is an easy bucket hat crochet pattern with colors inspired by the classic Breton striped shirts of the French Navy. The pattern is available in 6 sizes from preemie through adult large.

One of the fun things about bucket hats is that there are so many styling options. You can wear them with the brim up or down, and even with the brim up just in the front and down on the sides and back.

This easy bucket hat crochet pattern has some texture to it because you’ll be crocheting into different loops throughout the project, and joining the top piece with a single crochet seam.

Easy Bucket Hat Crochet Pattern by Underground Crafter



This easy bucket hat crochet pattern is inspired by the classic Breton striped shirts of the French Navy. It is available in 6 sizes. The Adult Medium size pattern was originally published in three parts as the sixteenth Weekend Mystery Crochet Along with Underground Crafter.
Finished Sizes
- Preemie (Newborn, Infant, Child, Adult Medium, Adult Large). First photographed sample is size Adult Medium shown on a mannequin with 22.5” (57 cm) head circumference. Second photographed sample shown flat is size Newborn.
- Preemie (4-5 Pounds): 9.5” (24 cm) hat circumference x 4.25” (11 cm) height.
- Newborn: 12.5” (32 cm) hat circumference x 5.5” (14 cm) height.
- Infant: 15.5” (39.5 cm) hat circumference x 6.75” (17 cm) height.
- Child: 19” (48.5 cm) hat circumference x 7.75” (19.5 cm) height.
- Adult Medium: 22” (56 cm) hat circumference x 8.75” (22 cm) height.
- Adult Large: 25” (63.5 cm) hat circumference x 9.25” (23.5 cm) height.
Materials
- King Cole Big Value Aran yarn (100% acrylic, 3 oz/100 g/257 yd/235 m) – 1 skein each in 3482 Navy and 3288 Nougat, or approximately 40 yd (65 yd, 95 yd, 130 yd, 170 yd, 205 yd)/36.5 m (59.5 m, 87 m, 119 m, 155.5 m, 187.5 m) in Main Color and 25 yd (40 yd, 55 yd, 75 yd, 100 yd, 120 yd)/23 m (36.5 m, 50.5 m, 68.5 m, 91.5 m, 110 m) in Contrast Color in any medium weight acrylic yarn.
- US Size H-8/5 mm crochet hook, or size needed to get gauge.
- Locking stitch marker set (optional, but helpful for marking the right side and holding pieces together for seaming).
- Yarn needle.
- I used the Ctcwsh ergonomic crochet hook set with stitch markers and yarn needles for my version.
Gauge
- 17 h-hdc = 4” (10 cm) across. For best fit, always check your gauge.
- Through Rnd 4 in pattern = 4” (10 cm) diameter. For best fit, always check your gauge.

Pattern Notes
- In the photos, the Adult Medium size uses Navy as MC and Nougat as CC; the Newborn size uses Nougat as MC and Navy as CC. Progress photos show the Adult Medium size.

Bucket Hat
Crown – All Sizes
- With MC, start with magic adjustable ring (see Pattern Notes).
- Rnd 1: Ch 1, 12 h-hdc in ring, tighten magic ring to close, join with sl st to first h-hdc. (12 sts)
- Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2 h-hdc3L in each st around, join with sl st to first h-hdc. (24 sts)
- Rnd 3: Ch 1, starting in first st [2 h-hdc3L in next st, h-hdc3L in next st] around, join with sl st to first h-hdc. (36 sts) PREEMIE SIZE ONLY: Fasten off MC. Continue on to Hat Body.
- Rnd 4: Ch 1, starting in first st [2 h-hdc3L in next st, h-hdc3L in next 2 sts] around, join with sl st to first h-hdc. (48 sts) NEWBORN SIZE ONLY: Fasten off MC. Continue on to Hat Body.
- Rnd 5: Ch 1, starting in first st [2 h-hdc3L in next st, h-hdc3L in next 3 sts] around, join with sl st to first h-hdc. (60 sts) INFANT SIZE ONLY: Fasten off MC. Continue on to Hat Body.
- Rnd 6: Ch 1, starting in first st [2 h-hdc3L in next st, h-hdc3L in next 4 sts] around, join with sl st to first h-hdc. (72 sts) CHILD SIZE ONLY: Fasten off MC. Continue on to Hat Body.
- Rnd 7: Ch 1, starting in first st [2 h-hdc3L in next st, h-hdc3L in next 5 sts] around, join with sl st to first h-hdc. (84 sts) ADULT MEDIUM SIZE ONLY: Fasten off MC. Continue on to Hat Body.
- Rnd 8: Ch 1, starting in first st [2 h-hdc3L in next st, h-hdc3L in next 6 sts] around, join with sl st to first h-hdc. (96 sts) ADULT LARGE SIZE ONLY: Fasten off MC. Continue on to Hat Body.

Hat Body – All Sizes
- With CC, ch 37 (49, 61, 73, 85, 97).
- Row 1: Turn, skip 1 ch, h-hdc in each ch across, changing to MC in last yo of final st, fasten off CC. – 36 (48, 60, 72, 84, 96) sts
- Row 2: (Right Side) Turn, ch 1, h-hdc3L in same st and each st across, changing to CC in last yo of final st, fasten off MC.
- Row 3: Turn, ch 1, h-hdcFL in same st and each st across, changing to MC in last yo of final st, fasten off CC.
- Repeat Rows 2-3 until piece measures approximately 1” (1.75”, 2.5”, 3”, 3.5”, 3.5”)/2.5 cm (4.5 cm, 6.5 cm, 7.5 cm, 9 cm, 9 cm), ending after a repeat of Row 2. Do not change color. Fasten off MC.

Join Crown and Body – All Sizes
- Line up top edge of Hat Body to seam of Crown with Wrong Sides together/Right Sides facing out. Join MC with sl st to 3L on Hat Body and FL on Crown, ch 1, starting in same st, join pieces with single crochet seam (see Pattern Notes), join CC with sl st to first sc, fasten off MC.

- Turn to Wrong Side (inside), join raw edges of Hat Body/striped section with slip stitch seam (see Pattern Notes), fasten off CC.
- Continue on to Brim instructions for size.
Brim – Preemie
- Rnd 1: Turn to Right Side starting with 36 sts. Join MC with sl st at seam at bottom of Hat Body, ch 1, starting in same st [2 scBL, scBL in next st] around, join with sl st to first sc. (54 sts)
- Rnd 2: Ch 1, starting in same st [2 h-hdc in next st, h-hdc in next 5 sts] around, join with sl st to first h-hdc. (63 sts)
- Rnd 3: Ch 1, starting in same st [2 h-hdc in next st, h-hdc in next 8 sts] around, join with sl st to first h-hdc. (70 sts)
- Rnd 4: Ch 1, sc in same st and each st around, join with sl st, fasten off MC. Continue on to Finishing.
Brim – Newborn
- Rnd 1: Turn to Right Side starting with 48 sts. Join MC with sl st at seam at bottom of Hat Body, ch 1, starting in same st [2 scBL, scBL in next st] around, join with sl st to first sc. (72 sts)
- Rnd 2: Ch 1, starting in same st [2 h-hdc in next st, h-hdc in next 3 sts] around, join with sl st to first h-hdc. (90 sts)
