I love crocheting granny squares and I wanted to make a variation on the traditional pattern with a heart center. Once I got started with these granny heart squares, I was having so much fun that I decided to make a scarf.

For my version, I used alternating colors of hearts and centers with a main color for the outer squares and border.

You can make your version using planned colors or keep it scrappy!

  • With yarn needle, weave in yarn tails from start of Rnd 7.
  • Watch the video tutorial for finishing the Granny Heart Squares below.

Assembly and Finishing

  • Arrange your squares as you’d like to seam them together. For my version, I arranged the squares so that the hearts were stacked on top of each other with alternating CA and CB hearts. Other options could include having the hearts side-by-side, or having 5 of the hearts stacking with points to the right, 1 heart at the center with the point going down, and the other 5 hearts with points to the left (so that when the scarf is folded around the back of the neck, all the hearts look right side up).
  • Once you have your squares positioned as you’d like them to appear on the final scarf, place the first 2 squares with right sides together. Use the long yarn tail from Rnd 8 of the first square to join the squares together with slip stitch seam (see Pattern Notes) on the wrong side, working from the inner chain of the same ch-2 sp, in each st and ch across the side of the square, and into the next inner chain of the next ch-2 sp. Continue seaming the squares together in this fashion until all 11 squares are joined.
  • With yarn needle, weave in ends on wrong side.

Border

  • Border Rnd 1: With right side facing up, join MC with sl st to any corner ch-2 sp, ch 1, 2 dc in same ch-2 sp, *[ch 1, sk 2 sts, 2 dc in next ch-1 sp] 6 times across square, ch 1, sk 2 sts,** (dc in last ch-2 sp of current square, dc2tog in same ch-2 sp and first ch-2 sp on next square, dc in ch-2 sp on next square); rep from * across side of scarf, ending at ** before corner ch-2 sp,++ (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in corner ch-2 sp; rep from * around, ending last rep at ++ before first ch-2 sp, 2 dc in ch-2 sp, ch 2, join with sl st to first dc.
  • Fasten off MC.
  • With yarn needle, weave in ends on the wrong side.
