If you’re looking for a beret crochet pattern with subtle shaping and textured stitches, you’ve come to the right place. The Bobble V-Stitch Beret is made with a variatiof on the beloved v-stitch using bobbles, and it has an ombré effect made by holding two strands of yarn together throughout.

Beret Crochet Pattern by Underground Crafter

This beret crochet pattern in 4 sizes uses a textured, bobble variation of the popular v-stitch. Pair it with the matching Bobble V-Stitch Cowl!

Finished Sizes

  • Infant (Toddler/Child, Teen/Adult Small, Adult Large). Photographed sample is size Teen/Adult Small shown on a mannequin with 22.5” (57 cm) head circumference.
    • Infant: 14.25” (36 cm) hat circumference x 5.25” (13.5 cm) height.
    • Toddler/Child: 17.25” (44 cm) hat circumference x 6.25” (16 cm) height.
    • Teen/Adult Small: 20.5” (52 cm) hat circumference x 8.5” (21.5 cm) height.
    • Adult Large: 23.5” (59.5 cm) hat circumference x 9.25” (23.5 cm) height.

Materials

  • Berroco Remix Light yarn (available online at Jimmy Beans | LoveCrafts | WeCrochet) (30% nylon/27% cotton/24% acrylic/10% silk/9% linen, 3.5 oz/100 g, 432 yd/400 m) – 1 skein each in 6927 Old Jeans (CA), 6919 Mist (CB), and 6951 Ice (CC), or approximately 140 yd (200 yd, 325 yd, 405 yd)/128 m (183 m, 297 m, 370.5 m) in each of 3 colors in any light weight, acrylic blend yarn
  • KnitPro Waves 2.0 (available online at LoveCrafts | Amazon) US Size I-9/5.5 mm crochet hook, or any size needed to obtain correct gauge.
  • Yarn needle.

Gauge

  • Through Rnd 4 in pattern = 4.5” (11.5 cm) diameter. For best fit, always check your gauge.

Abbreviations Used in This Pattern

  • bob – 4-repeat bobble stitch – [Yo, insert hook in st, yo and draw up a loop, yo and draw through 2 loops] 4 times in same st, yo and draw through all 5 loops on hook. A helpful video tutorial for this stitch is available below.

  • bv-st – bobble v-stitch – (Bob, ch 1, bob) in same st or sp.
  • CA – Color A
  • CB – Color B
  • CC – Color C
  • ch – chain
  • dc – double crochet
  • Rnd(s) – Round(s)
  • RS – right (front) side
  • sc – single crochet
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sp – space
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • WS – wrong (back) side
  • yo – yarn over
  • * Repeat instructions after asterisk as indicated.
  • () Work stitches between parentheses into same stitch or space.
  • [] – Repeat instructions between brackets as indicated.

Pattern Notes

  • This pattern is worked by holding 2 strands of yarn together at all times, changing color at the end of every second Round in the following sequence:
    • CA + CA,
    • CA + CB,
    • CB + CB,
    • CB + CC,
    • CC + CC, and
    • Restart the sequence.
  • Change color in the final yarn over of the designated stitch as demonstrated in the video below.

  • Carry yarn tails on inside (WS) until finished.

Pattern Instructions

Beret – All Sizes

  • Starting at crown with 2 strands of yarn and following the color sequence listed in the Pattern Notes, ch 4, skip 3 ch, join with sl st to next ch to form ring.
  • Rnd 1: (RS) Ch 1, 12 dc in ring, join with sl st to first dc. (12 sts)
  • Rnd 2: (RS) Ch 1, 2 dc in each st around, join with sl st to first dc. (24 sts)
  • Rnd 3: (RS) Ch 1, starting in first st [2 dc in next st, dc in next st] around, join with sl st to first dc. (36 sts)
  • Rnd 4: (RS) Ch 1, starting in first st [2 dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts] around, join with sl st to first dc. (48 sts) INFANT SIZE ONLY: CONTINUE ON TO WORK EVEN.
  • Rnd 5: (RS) Ch 1, starting in first st [2 dc in next st, dc in next 3 sts] around, join with sl st to first dc. (60 sts) TODDLER/CHILD SIZE ONLY: CONTINUE ON TO WORK EVEN.
  • Rnd 6: (RS) Ch 1, starting in first st [2 dc in next st, dc in next 4 sts] around, join with sl st to first dc. (72 sts) TEEN/ADULT SMALL SIZE ONLY: CONTINUE ON TO WORK EVEN.
  • RND 7: (RS) Ch 1, starting in first st [2 dc in next st, dc in next 5 sts] around, join with sl st to first dc. (84sts) ADULT LARGE SIZE ONLY: CONTINUE ON TO WORK EVEN.

Work Even

  • Work Even Rnd 1: Turn to WS, ch 1, [skip 1 st, bv-st in next st, skip 1 st] around, join with sl st to first bob. – 48 (60, 72, 84 sts)/16 (20, 24, 28) bv-sts
  • Work Even Rnd 2: (WS) Sl st to ch-1 sp, ch 1, [bv-st in ch-1 sp, skip 2 sts] around to last ch-1 sp, bv-st in next ch-1 sp, skip 1 st.
  • Repeat Work Even Rnd 2 until hat measures approximately 4.75” (5.75”, 8”, 8.75”)/12 cm (14.5 cm, 20.5 cm, 22.5 cm) from crown.
  • Work Even Rnd 3: Turn to RS, ch 1, sc in first st and each st and ch-1 sp around, join with sl st to first sc. – 48 (60, 72, 84 sts)
  • Work Even Rnd 4: (RS) Ch 1, sc in first st and each st around, join with sl st to first sc.
  • Repeat Rnd 4 until hat measures approximately 5.25” (6.25”, 8.5”, 9.25”)/13.5 cm (16 cm, 21.5 cm, 23.5 cm) from crown.
  • Fasten off yarn.

Finishing

  • With yarn needle, weave in remaining ends on WS.
