AccuQuilt GO! Me Fabric Cutter Unboxing, Set Up, & Review

Have you been considering a fabric cutter? Not sure if it’s worth it, how easy it is to use, or if it wastes fabric? In today’s Sewing Basics post, I’m sharing my unboxing, set up, and review of the AccuQuilt GO! Me with answers to these and other questions! This post also includes video to watch of the unboxing and set up.

I purchased the GO! Me Fabric Cutter Starter Set that I’m reviewing today, but back in 2020 when I was a Michael Miller Fabric Brand Ambassador, AccuQuilt sent each of us the GO! Fabric Cutter Starter Set for free to use as part of the Peek Into Batiks Quilt Along. Most of us know that 2020 didn’t work out quite like we all thought it would on New Year’s Day, so I didn’t end up using the GO! much. I actually left it in storage in New York City when I moved to Burlington.

The whole ironing and cutting process normally kills my will to sew. So, once I got settled in Vermont, I started thinking a fabric cutter could be pretty useful since fabric prep is my absolute least favorite part about sewing. I also love strip piecing (and have a lot of patterns already) so if I could magically have 2-1/2″ fabric strips available when ever I wanted to sew, that would be pretty cool.

A 2″ strip I cut with the AccuQuilt GO! Me and the GO! Strip Cutter-1″, 1 1/2″, 2″ (1/2″, 1″, 1 1/2″ Finished) Die

I decided to buy a GO! Me Fabric Cutter Starter Set along with some additional dies and cutting mats. Watch the video including my unboxing, set up, and review below.

What is the AccuQuilt GO! Me?

AccuQuilt makes several different fabric cutting machines along with the dies and accessories to use them. AccuQuilt fabric cutters are designed with quilters in mind, so the dies include common shapes for straight and curved piecing, frequently used strip widths, and both expected and unique appliqué pieces. The GO! Me is their smallest and most portable model. The GO! Me is hand cranked using a roller grip handle, and doesn’t require electricity or charging. You can cut up to six layers of 100% cotton quilting fabric at once, but you can also cut batting and other fabrics including wool, flannel, fleece, denim, leather, felt, silk, and satin (though the number of layers you can cut at once will vary based on fabric thickness). The GO! Me measures 12-1/2″ wide x 4-1/2″ long x 8-1/4″ height when closed, and extends to 17″ long when open. It has a 6″ cutting width and weighs 8-1/2 pounds. The GO! Me is also AccuQuilt’s most affordable model, so if you’re new to fabric cutters it makes a great entrée.

What’s inside the AccuQuilt GO! Me box?

Inside of the GO! Me box, you’ll find the fabric cutter with a drawstring storage bag, a 6″ x 6″ cutting mat, and two dies: the GO! Half Square Triangle and the GO! Quarter Square Triangle. Both make 3″ finished squares. There is also an instruction booklet and quick start guide and five patterns for all skill levels. (You can find free patterns using dies compatible with the GO! Me here on AccuQuilt’s website.) As I mention in the video, the whole set is packaged in a box with a folded cardboard bottom, so you’ll want to hold the bottom of the box when lifting as the contents are 10-1/2 pounds.

How easy is the AccuQuilt GO! Me to use?

The GO! Me is extremely easy to use. (Watch me use it in the video at the beginning of this post!) You just extend the sides out, place the die with the foam side up and the green side down, put your fabric on top of the die, and cover the fabric with the cutting mat. Once you have that little sandwich of die-fabric-mat, you press it up to the roller and then crank it through. Once it comes out on the other side, you pick up the cutting mat and the fabric pieces will easily separate. I find the GO! Me easier to use for repetitive fabric cutting than using a cutting mat, acrylic ruler, and rotary cutter. Not only will those often take up more space, but you have to put pressure on both wrists to hold the ruler and rotary cutter in place. With the GO! Me, you can cut while sitting or standing, you can alternate the hands you use to crank, and the crank moves easily without a lot of effort or strain needed.

Does the AccuQuilt GO! Me waste fabric?

If you’ve used a Cricut Maker or other die cutting machines that allegedly cut fabric, you know there can be waste from unnecessary spaces between cuts or because the cuts aren’t clean and need to get redone. In contrast, the GO! Me doesn’t waste fabric. As I mentioned in the video, if I’m using a piece of 100% cotton quilting fabric that is 1/2 yard or smaller and I want to cut the entire piece, I would fold it over on the die and then remove the parts that aren’t cut (because the fabric extends beyond the die cutting area) in large pieces so they could be reused. You could also pre-cut your fabric to make it closer to the size of the cutting area of the die, being sure to leave about 1/2″ overlap. The GO! Me die cuts are more accurate than when I rotary cut, so I don’t see much waste and it’s easy to put aside leftovers into my scrap bin.

How does Underground Crafter use the AccuQuilt GO! Me?

I use the GO! Me mostly for cutting fabric strips. I’ve mentioned before that I love strip quilting and I don’t like fabric prep. But buying endless rolls of pre-cut fabric can get pricey,, so I use the GO! Me instead! I have the GO! Strip Cutter-1″, 1 1/2″, 2″ (1/2″, 1″, 1 1/2″ Finished) Die and the GO! Small Strip Cutter-2 1/2″ (2″ Finished) Die. Both of these are too long to use with the 6″ x 6″ cutting mat that’s included with the GO! Me. You’ll need a 6″ x 12″ cutting mat for the small strip die and a 6″ x 24″ cutting mat for the multi strip die. I also have some appliqué dies like the Mini Stocking and Mitten.

What dies and accessories can I use with the AccuQuilt GO! Me?

The 6″ cutting width of the GO! Me is compatible with over 160 GO! dies in the 5″ x 10″, 6″ x 12″, 6″ x 6″, and 6″ x 24″ sizes. You can use cutting mats in the 5″ x 10″ size as well as any with a 6″ width. AccuQuilt also sells storage for dies and fabric cutters.

Is the AccuQuilt GO! Me worth it for me?

The GO! Me is ideal for folks that have a small home sewing space or who don’t have a dedicated sewing space but enjoy sewing and want to minimize cutting time with an easy set up. If you’re concerned about safety because you sew around young children or pets, the GO! Me dies don’t have sharp edges to lock away like a rotary cutter does. The GO! Me is also great for people who like to take classes, attend retreats, or sew at guild meetings or craft meetups because it’s designed to be portable. It’s only 12-1/2″ wide and 4-1/2″ long, so it takes up very little space when it is closed. If you prefer sewing to cutting and like to quilt or sew projects that use repetitive piecing, I think it will be worth it! When you buy the GO! Me Starter Set directly from the AccuQuilt website, you can try if out for 30 days risk free. (Get all the details of the return policy for this set here on AccuQuilt’s website.) AccuQuilt also has a trade-up program through their website, so if you end up loving the GO! Me but want a bigger machine, you can get up to a $144 credit towards your next fabric cutter.

I hope this post answered your questions about the AccuQuilt GO! Me. You can buy the GO! Me from AccuQuilt directly (recommended, because of the 30-day guarantee and the trade-up program mentioned above), but you can also buy AccuQuilt products on SewingMachinesPlus | Sewing Parts Online | Amazon.
