Celia Granny Square Crochet Pattern

I’m sharing the Celia Square, the seventh of 30 free patterns for 8″ squares in the 2026 Granny Square Month Crochet Along.

For the Celia Square (and the other squares I designed for this CAL), I used three jumbo skeins of Herrschners Worsted 8 Wildflowers yarn (from left to right, in Wildflowers, Bluet, and Dandelion). The colors came together really well!

Celia Square

8″ Crochet Granny Square Pattern by Underground Crafter

The Celia Square is the seventh of 30 free crochet patterns for 8″ square in the 2026 Granny Square Month Crochet Along with Underground Crafter. This textured 8” granny square is made of 4 smaller squares with cheerful centers.  

Finished Size

  • Motif: 8” (20.5 cm) square.

Materials

  • Herrschners Worsted 8 Wildflowers yarn (100% acrylic, 8 oz/226 g, 489 yd/448 m) – 1 skein each in Dandelion (CA), Bluet (CB), and Wildflowers (CC), or approximately 25 yd (23 m) in CA, 40 yd (36.5 m) each in CB and CC in any medium weight yarn.
  • KnitPro Waves 2.0 (available online at LoveCrafts | Amazon) US Size I-9/5.5 mm crochet hook, or any size needed to obtain correct gauge.
  • Yarn needle.

Gauge

  • Finished Square = 8” (20.5 cm) square in pattern. Exact gauge is not critical for this pattern.

Abbreviations Used in This Pattern

  • BL – back loop only – Fiber Flux has a helpful video for identifying the back loop here.
  • CA – Color A
  • CB – Color B
  • CC – Color C
  • ch – chain
  • dc – double crochet
  • dc2tog – double crochet 2 stitches together – [Yo, insert hook in next st, yo and draw up a loop, yo and draw through 2 loops] twice, yo and draw through all 3 loops on hook. A helpful video tutorial for this decrease is available below.

  • FL – front loop only – A helpful video for identifying the front loop is available here.
  • FPsc – front post single crochet – Insert hook from front around back to front of st in previous round, yo and draw up a loop, yo and draw through 2 loops. A helpful video tutorial for this stitch is available below.

  • hdc – half double crochet
  • pf – 2-repeat puff – Yo, draw up a loop in next st, yo, insert hook in same st, yo and draw up a loop, yo and draw through all 5 loops on hook. A helpful video tutorial for this stitch is available below.

  • Rnd(s) – Round(s)
  • RS – right (front) side
  • sc – single crochet
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sp – space
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • yo – yarn over
  • *Repeat instructions after asterisk as indicated.
  • [] Repeat instructions between brackets as indicated.
  • () Work instructions in parentheses into same stitch or space.

Pattern Notes

  • Ch 1 at start and sl st at end of Rounds DO NOT count as stitches.

Pattern Instructions

Inner Square – Make 4

  • With CA, ch 4, skip 3 ch, join with sl st to next ch to form ring.
  • Rnd 1: (RS) Ch 1, 12 dc in ring, join with sl st to first dc. (12 sts)
  • Rnd 2: (RS) Ch 1, (dcFL, hdcFL, scFL) in same st and each st around, join with sl st to first dc, fasten off CA. (36 sts)
  • Rnd 3: Join CB to RS with slstBL to any st on Rnd 2, 2 dcBL in same st and each st around, join with sl st to first dc. (24 sts)
  • Rnd 4: (RS) Ch 1, 2 dc in same st, *hdc in next st, sc in next 3 sts, hdc in next st, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, 2 dc in first st, ch 2, join with sl st to first dc, fasten off CB with long yarn tail (approximately 18”/45.5 cm) for seaming. (9 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)

Join Squares

  • Position 2 squares with RS together. With long yarn tail from one square, join with slip stitch seam (see Pattern Notes) on one side on back from ch-2 sp to ch-2 sp. Repeat with second pair of squares.
  • Position both pair of squares with RS together. With CB, join with slip stitch seam along both squares on back from ch-2 sp, across first square, into next 2 ch-2 sp, across second square, to ch-2 sp. Fasten off CB.

Outer Square

  • Rnd 5: Join CC on RS with sl st to any ch-2 sp, ch 1, 2 dc in first ch-2 sp, *[skip 1 st, 3 dc in next st, skip 1 st] 3 times, dc in first ch-2 sp, dc2tog in first and second ch-2 sp, dc in second ch-2 sp, [skip 1 st, 3 dc in next st, skip 1 st] 3 times,** (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, 2 dc in first ch-2 sp, ch 1, join with sc (counts as second ch in ch-2 sp) to first dc. (25 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)
  • Rnd 6: (RS) Ch 1, sc in same ch-2 sp, *[sc in next st, pf in next st] across to last st on side, sc in next st,** (sc, ch 2, sc) in next ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, sc in first st, ch 2, join with sc (counts as second ch in ch-2 sp) to first sc. (27 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)
  • Rnd 7: (RS) Ch 1, sc in same ch-2 sp, *sc in next 2 sts, [FPsc around next pf, sc in next st] across to last st on side, sc in next st,** (sc, ch 2, sc) in next ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, sc in first sp, ch 2, join with sl st to first sc, fasten off CC. (29 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)

Finishing

  • With yarn needle, weave in ends on wrong side of square.
  • Spray or wet block (see Pattern Notes) if necessary.
