What Is Granny Square Month and How Does the 2026 Edition Work?
The pattern for iconic motif we call the traditional granny square was first published in a printed leaflet by Weldon and Company of London in the late 1800s. Some folks are sticklers and say that specific pattern is the only one that is “supposed to be” called a granny square, but I prefer to be more inclusive!
For this year’s 30-day celebration of Granny Square Month, I’ve teamed up with some of my favorite crochet designers. Every day in June 2026, we’ll be sharing a brand new free crochet pattern for an 8″ square! Join all 30 together to make your own blanket or crochet just your favorites, combine these squares with other motif projects, or do whatever makes you happy!
