Elena Square
8″ Crochet Granny Square Pattern by Underground Crafter
The Elena Square is the ninth of 30 free crochet patterns for 8″ square in the 2026 Granny Square Month Crochet Along with Underground Crafter. This 8” square is a variation on the classic granny square.
Finished Size
- Motif: 8” (20.5 cm) square.
Materials
- Herrschners Worsted 8 Wildflowers yarn (100% acrylic, 8 oz/226 g, 489 yd/448 m) – 1 skein each in Dandelion (CA), Bluet (CB), and Wildflowers (CC), or approximately 35 yd (32 m) in CA, 10 yd (9 m) in CB, and 22 yd (20 m) in CC in any medium weight yarn.
- KnitPro Waves 2.0 (available online at LoveCrafts | Amazon) US Size I-9/5.5 mm crochet hook, or any size needed to obtain correct gauge.
- Yarn needle.
Gauge
- Finished Square = 8” (20.5 cm) square in pattern. Exact gauge is not critical for this pattern.

Pattern Notes
- Square is crocheted in the round with the right (front) side facing up.
- Ch 1 at start and sl st at end of Rounds DO NOT count as stitches.

Pattern Instructions
Square
- With CA, ch 4, skip 3 ch, join with sl st to next ch to form ring.
- Rnd 1: Ch 1, [3 dc in ring, ch 2] 4 times, join with sl st to first dc, fasten off CA. (3 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)
- Rnd 2: Join CB with sl st to any corner ch-2 sp, ch 1, sc in same sp, *ch 3, skip 3 sts,** (sc, ch 2, sc) in ch-2 sp; rep from * around, ending last rep at **, sc in first ch-2 sp, ch 2, join with sl st to first sc, fasten off CB. (2 sc + ch-3 sp/side + 4 ch-2 sp)
- Rnd 3: Join CA with sl sto to any corner ch-2 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in same ch-2 sp, *ch 1, skip next st, 3 dc in ch-3 sp, ch 1, skip next st,** (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in ch-2 sp; rep from * around, ending last rep at **, 3 dc in first ch-2 sp, ch 2, join with sl st to first dc, fasten off CA. (9 dc + 2 ch-1 sp/side + 4 ch-2 sp)
- Rnd 4: Join CC with sl st to any corner ch-2 sp, ch 1, sc in same sp, *[ch 3, skip 3 sts,** sc in ch-1 sp] twice, rep from * to ** once,+ (sc, ch 2, sc) in ch-2 sp; rep from * around, ending last rep at +, sc in first ch-2 sp, ch 2, join with sl st to first sc, fasten off CB. (4 sc + 3 ch-3 sp/side + 4 ch-2 sp)
- Rnd 5: Join CA with sl sto to any corner ch-2 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in same ch-2 sp, *[ch 1, skip next st, 3 dc in ch-3 sp] across side to last sc, ch 1, skip next st** (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in ch-2 sp; rep from * around, ending last rep at **, 3 dc in first ch-2 sp, ch 2, join with sl st to first dc, fasten off CA. (15 dc + 4 ch-1 sp/side + 4 ch-2 sp)
- Rnd 6: Join CB with sl st to any corner ch-2 sp, ch 1, sc in same sp, *[ch 3, skip 3 sts,** sc in ch-1 sp] 4 times, rep from * to ** once,+ (sc, ch 2, sc) in ch-2 sp; rep from * around, ending last rep at +, sc in first ch-2 sp, ch 2, join with sl st to first sc, fasten off CB. (6 sc + 5 ch-3 sp/side + 4 ch-2 sp)
- Rnd 7: Join CA with sl sto to any corner ch-2 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in same ch-2 sp, *[ch 1, skip next st, 3 dc in ch-3 sp] across side to last sc, ch 1, skip next st** (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in ch-2 sp; rep from * around, ending last rep at **, 3 dc in first ch-2 sp, ch 2, join with sl st to first dc, fasten off CA. (21 dc + 6 ch-1 sp/side + 4 ch-2 sp)
- Rnd 8: Join CC with sl st to first st after any ch-2 sp, ch 1, starting in same st [sc in next st and each st across to corner, ch 3, skip ch-2 sp] 4 times, join with sl st to first sc. (27 sts/side + 4 ch-3 sp)
- Rnd 9: Ch 1, starting in first st, *hdc in next st, [ch 1, skip 1 st, hdc in next st] across side, (hdc, ch 2, hdc) in ch-3 sp; rep from * around, join with sl st to first hdc, fasten off CC. (29 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)
Finishing
- With yarn needle, weave in ends on wrong side of square.
- Spray or wet block (see Pattern Notes) if necessary.
