8″ Crochet Granny Square Pattern by Underground Crafter
The Gabriela Square is the twenty-eighth of 30 free crochet patterns for 8″ square in the 2026 Granny Square Month Crochet Along with Underground Crafter. This 8” square starts with a flower and continues with classic granny stitches, ending with a solid border.
Finished Size
- Motif: 8” (20.5 cm) square.
Materials
- Herrschners Worsted 8 Wildflowers yarn (100% acrylic, 8 oz/226 g, 489 yd/448 m) – 1 skein each in Dandelion (CA), Bluet (CB), and Wildflowers (CC), or approximately 45 yd (41 m) in CA, 25 yd (23 m) in CB, and 20 yd (18.5 m) in CC in any medium weight yarn.
- KnitPro Waves 2.0 (available online at LoveCrafts | Amazon) US Size I-9/5.5 mm crochet hook, or any size needed to obtain correct gauge.
- Yarn needle.
Gauge
- Finished Square = 8” (20.5 cm) square in pattern. Exact gauge is not critical for this pattern.

Pattern Notes
- Square is crocheted in the round with the right (front) side facing up.
- Ch 1 at start and sl st at end of Rounds DO NOT count as stitches.

Square
- With CB, ch 4, skip 3 ch, join with sl st to next ch to form ring.
- Rnd 1: Ch 1, 6 sc in ring, join with sl st to first sc. (6 sts)
- Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in same st, [ch 3, sc in next st] around, ch 3, join with sl st to first sc, fasten off CB. (6 sc + 6 ch-3 sp)
- Rnd 3: Join CA with sl st to any ch-3 sp, ch 1, starting in same ch-3 sp *(sc, ch 1, 5 dc, ch 1, sc) in ch-3 sp,** skip next sc; rep from * around, ending last rep at **, join with sl st to first sc. (6 petals)
- Rnd 4: Working behind petals, [ch 5, skip petal, sc in skipped sc on Rnd 2] around. (6 sc + 6 ch-3 sp)
- Rnd 5: Ch 1, [(sc, ch 1, 7 dc, ch 1, sc) in next ch-5 sp] around, join with sl st to first sc of first petal. (6 petals)
- Rnd 6: Working behind petals, [ch 6, skip petal, sl st to first sc of next petal] around, fasten off CA. (6 ch-6 sp)
- Rnd 7: Join CC with sl st to any ch-6 sp, ch 1, 8 dc in same and each ch-6 sp around, join with sl st to first dc. (48 sts)
- Rnd 8: Ch 1, 3 dc in same st, *[ch 1, skip 3 st, 3 dc in next st] twice, ch 1, skip 3 sts,** (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next st; rep from * around, ending last rep at **, 3 dc in first st, ch 2, join with sl st to first dc, fasten off CC. (12 dc + 3 ch-1 sp/side + 4 ch-2 sp)
- Rnd 9: Join CB with sl st to any corner ch-2 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in same ch-2 sp, *[ch 1, skip 3 sts, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp] across to corner ch-2 sp,** (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch-2 sp; rep from * around, ending last rep at **, 3 dc in first ch-2 sp, join with sc (counts as second ch in ch-2 sp) to top of first dc. (15 dc + 4 ch-1 sp/side + 4 ch-2 sp)
- Rnd 10: Rep Rnd 9 once, fasten off CB. (18 dc + 5 ch-1 sp/side + 4 ch-2 sp)
- Rnd 11: Join CA and rep Rnd 9 once. (21 dc + 6 ch-2 sp/side + 4 ch-2 sp)
- Rnd 12: Ch 1, hdc in same ch-2 sp, *[hdc in next 3 sts, hdc in ch- 1 sp] across side to last 3 sts, hdc in next 3 sts,** (hdc, ch 2, hdc) in ch-2 sp; rep from * around, ending last rep at **, hdc in first ch-2 sp, ch 2, join with sl st to first hdc, fasten off CA. (29 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)
Finishing
- With yarn needle, weave in ends on wrong side of square.
- Spray or wet block (see Pattern Notes) if necessary.
