Scarves are one of my favorite projects to crochet for charity. Unlike hats and mittens, you don’t have to worry as much about gauge, and they work up much faster than blankets.
This simple scarf pattern is beginner friendly, but more more experienced folks I included a few changes to keep you interested. I used Caron Cinnamon Swirl Cakes yarn, a self-striping yarn, for my version, but you could also make it scrappy by changing colors throughout.

Crochet Simple Scarf Pattern by Underground Crafter

Finished Size
- Teen/Adult: 6″ (15 cm) wide x 57″ (145 cm) long.
Materials
- Caron Cinnamon Swirl Cakes yarn (100% acrylic, 8oz/227 g, 407 yd/372 m) – 1 skein in 81003 Oceana, or approximately 407 yd (372 m) in any medium weight yarn.
- US Size I-9/5.5 mm crochet hook, or any size needed to obtain correct gauge.
- Yarn needle.
Gauge
- 25 sts in pattern = 6” (15 cm) across. Exact gauge is not critical for this project.
Abbreviations Used in This Pattern
- ch – chain
- dc – double crochet
- hdc – half double crochet
- sc – single crochet
- sp – space
- st(s) – stitch(es)
- [] Repeat instructions between brackets as indicated.
- () Repeat instructions within parentheses into same stitch.
Pattern Notes
- Stitch multiple is 3 ch, + 2 ch. To adjust width, add multiples of 3 ch (for a wider scarf) or subtract multiples of 3 ch (for a narrower scarf).
- Scarf length can be adjusted by crocheting more or fewer repeats of Rows 2-14.
- There are many ways to crochet into chain spaces. This pattern uses the first version shown in the video below.

Pattern Instructions
Scarf
- Ch 26.
- Row 1: Turn, skip 1 ch, sc in next ch and each ch across. (25 sts)
- Row 2: Turn, ch 1, sc in first st, [skip 2 sts, (sc, hdc, dc) in next st] across.
- Row 3: Turn, ch 1, sc in first dc, [skip 2 sts, (sc, hdc, dc) in next dc] across to last 3 sts, skip 2 sts, (sc, hdc, dc) in next sc.
- Rows 4-11: Repeat Row 3, 8 times.
- Row 12: Turn, ch 1, sc in first st and each st across.
- Row 13: Turn, ch 1, sc in first st, [ch 1, skip 1 st, sc in next st] across.
- Row 14: Turn, ch 1, sc in first st, [sc in next ch-1 sp, sc in next st] across.
- Repeat Rows 2-14 until Scarf measures approximately 57″ (145 cm) or desired length, ending after Row 12.
- Fasten off.
