Book Review

Learn to Crochet Circles into Squares by Candi Jensen and Heather Vantress book review on Underground Crafter

Learn to Crochet Circles into Squares by Candi Jensen and Heather Vantress is a technique and pattern booklet designed to help crocheters learn the basics of transitioning from round shapes into squares through photo tutorials and 8 projects.

The booklet starts with a brief introduction and a visual table of contents with pictures of each of the 8 projects. The next section is a 4-page photo tutorial that walks readers through a simple, circle to square pattern, step by step.

The next 5 patterns are for projects (for a scarf, dishcloth, placemat, afghan, and baby blanket) using this original square with variations in color, number of rounds, and finishing methods. The final 3 patterns in the book (for a purse, pillow, and afghan) are made with a different square that incorporates post stitches.

The booklet ends with yarn information for the patterns (which are made with a variety of Red Heart and Lion Brand yarns), a key to U.S. pattern abbreviations, yarn weight and hook charts, and illustrated explanations of post stitches and the whip stitch join.

Learn to Crochet Circles into Squares is a booklet designed for beginner crocheters (or those who are new to motifs or shape-changing motifs). Each pattern includes several large pictures of the project, a shopping (supplies) list, and gauge information. The booklet lays flat so you can crochet while reading or looking at the tutorial. This booklet is ideal for crocheters who want to learn how to make square motifs with a circle at the center and who enjoy practicing new techniques on several projects before moving on to a new technique. More advanced crocheters might find the patterns too simple, or are more likely to experiment by changing out the motifs but keeping the shapes of the original projects intact.
