Snowman Crochet Hat Pattern by Underground Crafter

This snowman crochet hat is a beginner-friendly pattern in the simple sack hat style. Available in 10 sizes from Newborn through Adult Large, you can make a matching set for the whole family. This is the first pattern in the ninth annual Holiday Stashdown Crochet Along with CAL Central.

Finished Size

  • Newborn (0-3 Months, 3-6 Months, 6-12 Months, Toddler, Child Small, Child Large, Teen/Adult Small, Adult Medium, Adult Large). Photographed sample is size Child Small.
  • Newborn: 12” (30.5 cm) hat circumference x 5.5” (14 cm) length.
  • 0-3 Months: 14” (35.5 cm) hat circumference x 6.5” (16.5 cm) length.
  • 3-6 Months: 15” (38 cm) hat circumference x 6.75” (17 cm) length.
  • 6-12 Months: 16” (40.5 cm) hat circumference x 7.25” (18.5 cm) length.
  • Toddler: 17” (43 cm) hat circumference x 7.5” (19 cm) length.
  • Child Small: 18” (45.5 cm) hat circumference x 8” (20.5 cm) length.
  • Child Large: 19” (48 cm) hat circumference x 8.5” (21.5 cm) length.
  • Teen/Adult Small: 20” (51 cm) hat circumference x 8.75” (22 cm) length.
  • Adult Medium: 21” (53.5 cm) hat circumference x 9.25” (23.5 cm) length.
  • Adult Large: 22” (56 cm) hat circumference x 9.5” (24 cm) length.

Materials

  • Loops and Threads Impeccable yarn (100% acrylic, 4.5 oz/127.5 g/285 yd/260 m) – 1 skein each in 15705 Red Hot (CA), 01005 White (CB), and 01630 Pumpkin (CD), or approximately 35 yd (40 yd, 45 yd, 50 yd, 55 yd, 75 yd, 80 yd, 85 yd, 115 yd, 120 yd)/32 m (36.5 m, 41 m, 45.5 m, 50.5 m, 68.5 m, 73 m, 78 m, 105 m, 110 m) in CA; 25 yd (40 yd, 45 yd, 50 yd, 55 yd, 60 yd, 75 yd, 80 yd, 85 yd, 90 yd)/23 m (36.5 m, 41 m, 46 m, 50.5 m, 55 m, 68.5 m, 73 m, 78 m, 82.5 m) in CB; and 10 yd (9 m) for all sizes in CC in any medium weight yarn.
  • Loops and Threads Impeccable, Tweed yarn (97% acrylic/3% other fibers, 3 oz/85 g/190 yd/174 m) – 1 skein in 13040 Charcoal Tweed (CC), or approximately 60 yd (65 yd, 70 yd, 70 yd, 75 yd, 75 yd, 80 yd, 80 yd, 85 yd, 85 yd)/55 m (59.5 m, 64 m, 64 m, 68.5 m, 68.5 m, 73 m, 73 m, 78 m, 78 m) in CC in any medium weight yarn.
  • US Size H-8/5 mm crochet hook, or size needed to obtain gauge.
  • US Size I-9/5.5 mm crochet hook, or size needed to obtain gauge.
  • Locking stitch markers.
  • Yarn needle.
  • Clover Pom-Pom Makers, Large – 2-1/2” size (Optional).

Gauge

  • 10 scBL with smaller crochet hook = 2.25” (5.5 cm) wide. For best fit, always check your gauge.
  • 14 dc with larger crochet hook = 4” (10 cm) wide. For best fit, always check your gauge.

Abbreviations Used in This Pattern

  • BL – back loop only – Fiber Flux has a helpful tutorial for identifying the back loop here.
  • CA – Color A
  • CB – Color B
  • CC – Color C
  • CD – Color D
  • ch – chain
  • dc – double crochet
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • Rnd(s) – Round(s)
  • sc – single crochet
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • () – Repeat instructions between parentheses into same stitch or space.

Pattern Notes

  • When selecting colors, note that the CA is the snowman’s scarf; CB is the snowman’s face; CC is the snowman’s hat, Mouth, and Eyes; and CD is the snowman’s Nose.
  • Hat Band is crocheted flat in rows using smaller hook. Hat Body is crocheted in the round using larger hook. Nose and Eyes are crocheted in the round using larger hook. Mouth is crocheted flat in rows using larger hook.
  • When possible, crochet over yarn tails as shown in the video tutorial below.

Pattern Instructions

Sack Hat

Hat Band (Snowman’s Scarf) – All Sizes

  • With CA and smaller hook, ch 7 (7, 7, 9, 9, 11, 11, 11, 15, 15).
  • Row 1: Turn, skip 1 ch, sc in next 6 (6, 6, 8, 8, 10, 10, 10, 14, 14) sts. – 6 (6, 6, 8, 8, 10, 10, 10, 14, 14) sts
  • Row 2: Turn, ch 1, scBL in first st and in each st across.
  • Repeat Row 2 until Hat Band measures approximately 12” (14”, 15”, 16”, 17”, 18”, 19”, 20”, 21”, 22”)/30.5 cm (35.5 cm, 38 cm, 40.5 cm, 43 cm, 45.5 cm, 48 cm, 51 cm, 53.5 cm, 56 cm) or desired hat circumference. Do not fasten off.
  • Fold Hat Band along long edge, being careful not to twist. Seam short ends together with slip stitch (see video below). Do not fasten off.

Pick Up Stitches – All Sizes

  • Begin working in the Round with CA along long edge with smaller hook.
  • Set Up Rnd: Ch 1, evenly work 40 (48, 52, 54, 58, 60, 66, 70, 72, 76) sc along edge (see video below), or any multiple of stitches. Join CB with sl st to first sc. Fasten off CA.

Work Even – All Sizes

  • Change to larger hook.
  • Rnd 1: Ch 1, dc in each st around, join with sl st to first dc. – 40 (48, 52, 54, 58, 60, 66, 70, 72, 76) sts.
  • Repeat Rnd 1 until Hat measures approximately 3.5” (4.5”, 4.75”, 5.25”, 5.5”, 6”, 6.5”, 6.75”, 7.25”, 7.5”)/9 cm (11.5 cm, 12 cm, 13.5 cm, 14 cm, 15 cm, 16.5 cm, 17 cm, 18.5 cm, 19 cm), or approximately 2” (5 cm) shorter than desired finished length. Join CC with sl st to first sc. Fasten off CB.
  • Continue with CC and larger hook. Repeat Rnd 1 until hat measures approximately 5.5” (6.5”, 6.75”, 7.25”, 7.5”, 8”, 8.5”, 8.75”, 9.25”, 9.5”)/14 cm (16.5 cm, 17 cm, 18.5 cm, 19 cm, 20.5 cm, 21.5 cm, 22 cm, 23.5 cm, 24 cm) in length, or desired finished length. Fasten off CC with long yarn tail (approximately 24”/61 cm) for seaming.
  • Fold Hat so that seam lays centered in back. Thread yarn needle with long yarn tail in CB. Weave yarn tail across top of stitches at back until you reach corner of fold. Match stitches on each side of the fold along final Round of Hat. With yarn needle, whipstitch (see Pattern Notes) through center loops across final Round of Hat. With yarn needle, weave in yarn tails on inside of Hat.

Nose – Newborn (0-3 Months, 3-6 Months, 6-12 Months, Toddler) Sizes ONLY

  • With larger hook and CD, ch 4.
  • Rnd 1: Turn, skip 1 ch, 2 sc in next st, sc in next st, 4 sc in next st, turn to work along underside of foundation chain, sc in next, 2 sc in first st. (10 sts)
  • Fasten off CD with long yarn tail (approximately 12”/30.5 cm).

Nose – Child Small (Child Large, Teen/Adult Small, Adult Medium, Adult Large) Sizes ONLY

  • With larger hook and CD, ch 4.
  • Rnd 1: Turn, skip 1 ch, 2 sc in next st, sc in next st, 4 sc in next st, turn to work along underside of foundation chain, sc in next, 2 sc in first st, place stitch marker to mark last st. (10 sts)
  • Rnd 2: 2 sc in first st, sc in next 3 sts, [2 sc in next st] twice, sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st. (14 sts)
  • Remove stitch marker and fasten off CD with long yarn tail (approximately 12”/30.5 cm).

Mouth – Newborn (0-3 Months, 3-6 Months, 6-12 Months, Toddler) Sizes ONLY

  • With larger hook and CC, ch 6.
  • Row 1: Turn, skip 1 ch, sc in next 5 ch. (5 sts)
  • Fasten off CC with long yarn tail (approximately 12”/30.5 cm).

Mouth – Child Small (Child Large, Teen/Adult Small, Adult Medium, Adult Large) Sizes ONLY

  • With larger hook and CC, ch 6.
  • Row 1: Turn, skip 1 ch, sc in next 5 ch. (5 sts)
  • Row 2: Turn, ch 1, sl st in first st, sc in next st, (hdc, dc, hdc) in next st, sc in next st, sl st in next st. (7 sts)
  • Fasten off CC with long yarn tail (approximately 12”/30.5 cm).

 Eyes (Make 2) – Newborn (0-3 Months, 3-6 Months, 6-12 Months, Toddler) Sizes ONLY

  • With larger hook and CC, ch 2.
  • Rnd 1: Turn, skip 1 ch, 6 sc in next ch, join with sl st to first sc. (6 sts)
  • Fasten off CC with long yarn tail (approximately 12”/30.5 cm).

Eyes (Make 2) – Child Small (Child Large, Teen/Adult Small, Adult Medium, Adult Large) Sizes ONLY

  • With larger hook and CC, ch 2.
  • Rnd 1: Turn, skip 1 ch, 6 sc in next ch, place stitch marker to mark last st. (6 sts)
  • Rnd 2: 2 sc in each st around, join with sl st to first sc. (12 sts)
  • Remove stitch marker and fasten off CC with long yarn tail (approximately 12”/30.5 cm).

Assembly

  • With yarn needle, weave in beginning yarn tail for each remaining piece.
  • Make 2 pom poms in CC with 2-1/2” size Clover Pom Pom Maker (see Pattern Notes). Tie off with long yarn tails (approximately 12”/30.5 cm) for seaming. Set pom poms aside.
  • Using finished project photo as guide for assembly, join pieces to the CB (“Face”) section of the front of the Hat using the whipstitch (see Pattern Notes) as follows. Tip: Use locking stitch markers like “pins” to hold each piece in place. Thread yarn needle with CC from Mouth and attach mouth towards the center bottom. Weave in yarn tail on inside of Hat. Thread yarn needle with CD from Nose and attach nose above the Mouth. Weave in yarn tail on inside of Hat. Thread yarn needle with CC from first Eye and attach above and to the side of the Nose. Weave in yarn tail on inside of Hat. Thread yarn needle with CC from second Eye and attach opposite the first Eye. Weave in yarn tail on inside of Hat.
  • Thread yarn needle with yarn tails in CC from first pom pom. Secure pom pom by sewing into top of Hat at one corner. Repeat for second pom pom on opposite corner. With yarn needle, weave in ends on inside of Hat.
