Crochet Christmas Tree Hat Pattern by Underground Crafter
This festive crochet Christmas tree hat combines bobbles and chain loops for a fun texture. This stocking cap is available in 10 sizes from newborn through adult large. This pattern was designed as part of the sixth annual Christmas in July Make Along.

- Newborn: 12” (30.5 cm) hat circumference x 12.5” (32 cm) height.
- 0-3 Months: 14” (35.5 cm) hat circumference x 13.5” (34.5 cm) height.
- 3-6 Months: 15” (38 cm) hat circumference x 14.5” (37 cm) height.

- Big Twist Value yarn (100% acrylic, 6 oz/170 g, 380 yd/347 m) – 1 skein each in White (CA), Toffee (CB), and Forest Green (CC), or approximately 45 yd (55 yd, 60 yd, 65 yd, 75 yd, 80 yd, 85 yd, 100 yd, 105 yd, 115 yd)/41 m (50.5 m, 55 m, 59.5 m, 68.5 m, 73 m, 77.5 m, 91.5 m, 96 m, 105 m) in CA, 10 yd (10 yd, 10 yd, 10 yd, 15 yd, 15 yd, 15 yd, 20 yd, 20 yd, 20 yd)/9 m (9 m, 9 m, 9 m, 13.5 m, 13.5 m, 13.5 m, 18.5 m, 18.5 m, 18.5 m) in CB, and 120 yd (150 yd, 170 yd, 180 yd, 205 yd, 220 yd, 250 yd, 280 yd, 295 yd, 325 yd)/109.5 m (137 m, 155.5 m, 164.5 m, 187.5 m, 201 m, 228.5 m, 256 m, 270 m, 297 m) in CC in any acrylic or wool medium weight yarn.
- US Size H-8/5 mm crochet hook, or any size needed to obtain correct gauge.
- US Size J-10/6mm crochet hook, or any size needed to obtain correct gauge.
- Yarn needle.
- Locking stitch markers (optional).
- I used the MECHEER crochet hook set including yarn needles, stitch markers, scissors, measuring tape, and case.
Gauge
- 8 sts = 1.75” (4.5 cm) with smaller hook in pattern for Hat Band Row 2. For best fit, always check your gauge.
- 14 dc = 4” (10 cm) with larger hook. For best fit, always check your gauge.

Pattern Instructions
Hat Band (Christmas Tree Trunk and Base) – All Sizes
- With CA and smaller hook, ch 7 (7, 7, 7, 9, 9, 9, 13, 13, 13).
- Row 1: Turn, skip 1 ch, [hdc in next ch, sl st in next ch] across. – 6 (6, 6, 6, 8, 8, 8, 12, 12, 12) sts
- Row 2: Turn, ch 1, starting in first st [hdcBL in next st, slst3L in next st] across.
- Repeat Row 2 until Hat Band measures approximately 4” (5”, 5”, 5.5”, 5.5”, 6”, 6.5”, 6.5”, 7”, 7.5”)/10 cm (13 cm, 13 cm, 14 cm, 14 cm, 15 cm, 16.5 cm, 16.5 cm, 18 cm, 19 cm), changing to CB in last yo of final slstBL. Fasten off CA.
- Repeat Row 2 until Hat Band measures approximately 8” (9”, 10”, 10.5”, 11.5”, 12”, 12.5”, 13.5”, 14”, 14.5”)/20.5 cm (23 cm, 25.5 cm, 26.6 cm, 29 cm, 30.5 cm, 32 cm, 34.5 cm, 38 cm, 37 cm), changing to CA in last yo of final slstBL. Fasten off CB.
- Repeat Row 2 until Hat Band measures approximately 12” (14”, 15”, 16”, 17”, 18”, 19”, 20”, 21”, 22”)/30.5 cm (35.5 cm, 38 cm, 40.5 cm, 43 cm, 45.5 cm, 48 cm, 51 cm, 53.5 cm, 56 cm). Do not fasten off.
- Fold Hat Band so that short edges are together, being careful not to twist, seam with sl st join (see video below) along short edge. Fasten off CA.

Work Even (Christmas Tree Body) – All Sizes
- Set Up Round: (RS) With smaller hook, join CC with sl st to back seam, ch 1, crocheting evenly along long edge (see video below), work 54 (60, 66, 66, 72, 72, 78, 84, 84, 90) sc around. – 54 (60, 66, 66, 72, 72, 78, 84, 84, 90) sts

- Switch to larger hook for the rest of the project.
- Round 1: (RS) Ch 1, dcBL in first st and each st around, join with sl st to first dc.
- Round 2: (RS) Ch 1, sc in first st and each st around, join with sl st to first sc.
- Round 3: Turn to WS, ch 1, starting in same st [sc in next 5 sts, bob in next st] around, join with sl st to first sc.
- Round 4: Turn to RS, ch 1, starting in first st [FPsc around next bob, sc in next 5 sts] around, join with sl st to first sc.
- Rounds 5-8: Repeat Rounds 1-4 once.

- Round 9: Repeat Round 1, join CA with sl st to first dc. Do not fasten off CC and carry up on inside of hat.
- Round 10: (RS) Ch 1, sc in same st, [ch 5, sc in next st] around, join CC with sl st to first sc, fasten off CA. – 54 (60, 66, 66) sts + 53 (59, 65, 65) ch-5 sp
- Round 11: (RS) Skipping all ch-5 sp and pushing them to RS, ch 1, starting in first st [sc2tog, sc in next 7 (8, 9, 9) sts] around, join with sl st to first sc. – 48 (54, 60, 60) sts
- Round 12: Repeat Round 2 once.

- ADULT LARGE Size ONLY: Continue on to Finishing.
Finishing
- Finishing Round 1: (RS) Ch 1, starting in first st, dc2tog around, join with sl st to first dc. (6 sts)
- Finishing Round 2: Repeat Round 2 once, join CA with sl st to first sc. Fasten off CC.
- Final Round: Turn to WS, ch 1, starting in first st, bob in each st around, join with sl st to first bob. Fasten off CA with a long tail, approximately 12” (30.5 cm) long.
- Thread yarn with long yarn tail from Final Round. Seam top of hat closed with whipstitch join (see Pattern Notes) across top of bobbles.
With yarn needle, weave in ends on inside of hat.
