Crochet Polar Bear Hat Pattern

This crochet polar bear hat pattern is available in 10 sizes. It is crocheted flat in rows and seamed to make assembling the polar bear face easier. It was designed for the 7th Annual Christmas in July Make Along.

- Newborn (0-3 Months, 3-6 Months, 6-12 Months, 1-2 Years, 3-5 Years, 6-12 Years, Teen/Adult Small, Adult Medium, Adult Large). Photographed sample is 3-6 Months size.
- Newborn: 12” (30.5 cm) circumference x 16.25” (41 cm) length.
- 0-3 Months: 14” (35.5 cm) circumference x 17.25” (44 cm) length.
- 3-6 Months: 15” (38 cm) circumference x 17.5” (44.5 cm) length.

- Big Twist Value yarn (100% acrylic, 6 oz/170 g, 380 yd/347 m) – 1 skein each in Varsity Red (CA), Ivory (CB), and Black (CC), or approximately 25 yd (30 yd, 30 yd, 30 yd, 45 yd, 50 yd, 50 yd, 85 yd, 90 yd, 90 yd)/23 m (27.5 m, 27.5 m, 27.5 m, 41 m, 45.5 m, 45.5 m, 77.5 m, 82.5 m, 82.5 m) in CA, 120 yd (150 yd, 160 yd, 175 yd, 185 yd, 200 yd, 220 yd, 220 yd, 240 yd, 255 yd)/109.5 m (137 m, 146.5 m, 160 m, 169 m, 183 m, 201 m, 201 m, 219.5 m, 233 m) in CB, and 30 yd (27.5 m) in CC in any medium weight yarn.
- US Size G-6/4 mm crochet hook, or any size needed to obtain correct gauge.
- US Size H-8/5 mm crochet hook, or any size needed to obtain correct gauge.
- US Size I-9/5.5 mm crochet hook, or any size needed to obtain correct gauge.
- I used KnitPro Waves 2.0 hooks (available online at LoveCrafts | Amazon)
- Small amounts of fiber filling.
- Stitch markers.
- Yarn needle.
Gauge
- Exact gauge for smallest hook (US Size G-6/4 mm) is not critical for this pattern. Stitches should be small so fiber filling doesn’t show.
- 5 scBL = 1.25” (3 cm) across with medium hook (US Size H-8/5 mm). For best fit, always check your gauge.
- 11 dc = 4” (10 cm) across with largest hook (US Size I-9/5.5 mm). For best fit, always check your gauge.

- With CA and medium hook, ch 6 (6, 6, 6, 8, 8, 8, 12, 12, 12).
- Row 1: Turn, skip 1 ch, sc in next ch and each ch across. – 5 (5, 5, 5, 7, 7, 7, 11, 11, 11) sts
- Row 2: Turn 1, ch 1, scBL in first st and each st across.

- With yarn needle, weave in yarn tail from starting chain on wrong side.
Polar Bear Bottom Muzzle – All Sizes
- With CB and smallest hook, start with magic adjustable ring (see Pattern Notes).
- Rnd 1: Ch 1, 6 sc in ring, tighten magic ring to close, pm in last st to mark position, move marker up each Rnd. (6 sts)
- Rnd 2: 2 sc in each st. (12 sts)
- Rnd 3: [2 sc in next st, sc in next st] around, fasten off CB with long yarn tail (approximately 12″/30.5 cm long) for seaming. (18 sts)
- With yarn needle, weave in yarn tail from starting chain on wrong side.

Polar Bear Eyes (Make 2) – All Sizes
- With CC and smallest hook, ch 2.
- Row 1: Turn, skip 1 ch, pf in next ch, ch 1, fasten off CC with long yarn tail (approximately 12″/30.5 cm long) for seaming. (1 st)
- With yarn needle, weave in yarn tail from starting chain.

Polar Bear Ears (Make 2) – All Sizes
- With CB and smallest hook, start with magic adjustable ring (see Pattern Notes).
- Rnd 1: Ch 1, 6 sc in ring, tighten magic ring to close, pm in last st to mark position, move marker up each Rnd. (6 sts)
- Rnd 2: 2 sc in each st. (12 sts)
- Rnd 3: [2 sc in next st, sc in next st] around. (18 sts)
- Rnd 4: [2 sc in next st, sc in next 2 sts] around, fasten off CB with long yarn tail (approximately 18″/46 cm long) for seaming. (24 sts)
- With yarn needle, weave in yarn tail from start on wrong side.

Assembly and Finishing – All Sizes

- Thread yarn needle with CB from end of Bottom Muzzle, position Bottom Muzzle near center of hat, starting at first row in CB above Hat Band. Join Bottom Muzzle to hat by sewing or with whipstitch seam (see Pattern Notes), stuffing lightly with fiber filling. Weave in yarn tail on wrong side (inside) of hat.

- Thread yarn needle with CB from end of Top Muzzle, position Top Muzzle above Bottom Muzzle. Join Top Muzzle to hat by sewing or with whipstitch seam (see Pattern Notes), stuffing lightly with fiber filling. Weave in yarn tail on wrong side (inside) of hat.

- Thread yarn needle with CC from end of first Eye, position Eye above Top Muzzle. Join first Eye to hat by sewing or with whipstitch seam (see Pattern Notes). Repeat with second Eye. Weave in yarn tails on wrong side (inside) of hat.

- Thread yarn needle with CB from end of first Ear. Fold first Ear in half at diameter. Seam first Ear with whipstitch seam (see Pattern Notes) along curved edge. Do not weave in yarn tail. Repeat with second Ear.

- Continuing with CB yarn tail from seamed Ears, position first Ear above Eyes, curving gently. Join first Ear to hat by sewing or with whipstitch seam (see Pattern Notes. Weave in yarn tail on wrong side (inside) of hat. Repeat with second Ear.

- Starting at Tip of stocking cap, thread yarn needle with CB from end of hat. Join unworked edges of CB section of stocking cap with mattress stitch seam (see Pattern Notes), stopping before Hat Band/CA section. Weave in yarn tails on wrong side (inside) of hat.

- Thread yarn needle with CA from end of Hat Band. Join unworked edges of CA/Hat Band section of stocking cap with mattress stitch seam (see Pattern Notes). Weave in yarn tails on wrong side (inside) of hat.
