Crochet Santa Hat Pattern: Slouchy Santa Stocking Cap in 10 Sizes

I’m sharing the third pattern in the 7th Annual Christmas in July Make Along. This crochet Santa hat pattern has a modern twist and the pattern is available in 10 sizes from newborn through adult large, so you can make one for the whole family.

Crochet Santa Hat Pattern

This crochet Santa hat pattern is available in 10 sizes. This slouchy twist on the classic stocking cap is perfect for the whole family. It was designed for the 7th Annual Christmas in July Make Along.

Finished Sizes

  • Newborn (0-3 Months, 3-6 Months, 6-12 Months, 1-2 Years, 3-5 Years, 6-12 Years, Teen/Adult Small, Adult Medium, Adult Large). Photographed sample is Adult Medium size shown on a mannequin with 22.5″ (57 cm) head circumference.
    • Newborn: 12” (30.5 cm) circumference x 13.75” (35 cm) length.
    • 0-3 Months: 14” (35.5 cm) circumference x 16” (40.5 cm) length.
    • 3-6 Months: 15” (38 cm) circumference x 15” (38 cm) length.
    • 6-12 Months: 16” (40.5 cm) circumference x 15.5” (39.5 cm) length.
    • Toddler: 17” (43 cm) circumference x 20.25” (51.5 cm) length.
    • Child Small: 18” (45.5 cm) circumference x 23” (58.5 cm) length.
    • Child Large: 19” (48.5 cm) circumference x 24.5” (62.5 cm) length.
    • Teen/Adult Small: 20” (51 cm) circumference x 24.75” (63 cm) length.

Materials

  • Big Twist Value yarn (100% acrylic, 6 oz/170 g, 380 yd/347 m) – 1 skein each in Ivory (CA) and Varsity Red (CB), or approximately 25 yd (30 yd, 35 yd, 35 yd, 50 yd, 50 yd, 55 yd, 70 yd, 75 yd, 75 yd)/23 m (27.5 m, 32 m, 32 m, 45.5 m, 45.5 m, 50.5 m, 64 m, 68.5 m, 68.5 m) in CA and 95 yd (130 yd, 130 yd, 145 yd, 195 yd, 235 yd, 270 yd, 275 yd, 335 yd, 340 yd)/87 m (119 m, 119 m, 132.5 m, 178.5 m, 215 m, 247 m, 251.5 m, 306.5 m, 311 m) in CB in any medium weight yarn.
  • US Size H-8/5 mm crochet hook, or any size needed to obtain correct gauge.
  • US Size J-10/6 mm crochet hook, or any size needed to obtain correct gauge.
  • Yarn needle.
  • (Optional) Clover Pom Pom Maker (available online at Lion Brand | Herrschners | WeCrochet | Amazon)– I used the large size for the Adult Medium version.

Gauge

  • 10 scBL = 2.25” (5.5 cm) across with smaller hook. For best fit, always check your gauge.
  • 13 dc = 4” (10 cm) across with larger hook. For best fit, always check your gauge.

Abbreviations Used in This Pattern

  • BL – back loop only – Rich Textures Crochet has a helpful tutorial for identifying the back loop here.
  • CA – Color A
  • CB – Color B
  • ch – chain
  • dc – double crochet
  • dc2tog – double crochet 2 stitches together (decrease) – [Yo, insert hook in next st, yo and draw up a loop, yo and draw through 2 loops] twice, yo and draw through all 3 loops on hook. A helpful video tutorial for this stitch is available below.

Pattern Instructions

Hat

Hat Band – All Sizes

  • With CA and medium hook, ch 7 (7, 7, 7, 9, 9, 9, 11, 11, 11).
  • Row 1: Turn, skip 1 ch, sc in next ch and each ch across. – 6 (6, 6, 6, 8, 8, 8, 10, 10, 10) sts
  • Row 2: Turn 1, ch 1, scBL in first st and each st across.
  • Repeat Row 2 until Hat Band measures approximately 12” (14”, 15″, 16”, 17”, 18”, 19”, 20”, 21”, 22”)/30.5 cm (35.5 cm, 38 cm, 40.5 cm, 43 cm, 45.5 cm, 48.5 cm, 51 cm, 53.5 cm, 56 cm) long, do not fasten off.
  • Fold Hat Band so that short edges are touching, turn to short edge, ch 1, join short edges with slip stitch seam (see Pattern Notes). Do not fasten off.

Work Even – All Sizes

  • Rnd 1: Turn to work along long edge of Hat Band, ch 1, evenly work along long edge (see Pattern Notes) to form 48 (52, 60, 60, 66, 72, 76, 76, 80, 84) sc around, fasten off CA, join CB with sl st to first sc. – 48 (52, 60, 60, 66, 72, 76, 76, 80, 84) sts
  • Switch to larger hook.
  • Rnd 2: Ch 1, dcBL in same st and in each st around, join with sl st to first dc.
  • Rnd 3: Ch 1, dc in same st and in each st around, join with sl st to first dc.
  • Repeat Rnd 3 until hat measures 2.25” (3.25”, 3.5”, 4”, 4.25”, 4.75”, 5.25”, 5.5”, 6”, 6.25”)/5.5 cm (8.5 cm, 9 cm, 10 cm, 11 cm, 12 cm, 13.5 cm, 14 cm, 15 cm, 16 cm) in length, do not fasten off.

Decrease to Stocking Cap Tip – Newborn (3-6 Months, 6-12 Months) Sizes

  • Continue with larger hook and 48 (60, 60) sts.
  • Rnd 4: Ch 1, starting in first st [dc2tog, dc in next 10 sts] around, join with sl st to first dc2tog. – 44 (55, 55) sts
  • Rnd 5: Ch 1, dc in same st and each st around, join with sl st to first dc.
  • Rnd 6: Ch 1, starting in first st [dc2tog, dc in next 9 sts] around, join with sl st to first dc2tog. – 40 (50, 50) sts
  • Rnd 7: Rep Rnd 5 once.
  • Rnd 8: Ch 1, starting in first st [dc2tog, dc in next 8 sts] around, join with sl st to first dc2tog. – 36 (45, 45) sts

Finishing – All Sizes

  • Thread yarn needle with CB from stocking cap tip, whipstitch (see Pattern Notes) tip closed. Weave in yarn tail on inside of hat.
  • With CA, make pompom following instructions on Clover Pom Pom Maker. Alternatively, see Pattern Notes for link to tutorial for making a pompom by hand.
  • Trim pompom.
  • Attach pompom to hat using yarn needle and yarn tail that tied pompom together.
  • With yarn needle, weave in all ends on inside of hat.
