I’m sharing an easy crochet beanie as the first pattern in the 12th Annual Holiday Stashdown Crochet Along with CAL Central Crochet. The Foliage Beanie pattern is available in 10 sizes from newborn through adult large. It’s a quick one-skein project using simple stitches in bulky yarn. It’s perfect for folks who like to make the same pattern for many folks on their handmade holiday gift list.

A few weeks ago, the folks from Herrschners sent me a box of new yarns to try out, and I fell in love with this skein of Be-Whirly yarn. It’s a bulky (#5/chunky) weight yarn that is marled and color changing, sort of like you held two strands of self-striping yarn in different colors together. The effect is really beautiful. I wanted the yarn to be the star of the show, so I designed a very easy crochet beanie pattern. It’s beginner friendly, but it’s also a great project for folks who do production crafting for craft shows and holiday markets, gifts for lots of family, and/or charity drives.
The Foliage Beanie is a very straightforward beanie style that anyone un-fussy on your handmade list would love.

This easy crochet beanie is available in 10 sizes from newborn through adult large. This one-skein project works up quickly using simple stitches in bulky yarn. This is the first pattern in the 12th Annual Holiday Stashdown Crochet Along with CAL Central Crochet.
Finished Sizes
- Newborn (0-3 Months, 3-6 Months, 6-12 Months, Toddler, Child Small, Child Large, Teen/Adult Small, Adult Medium, Adult Large). Photographed sample is Teen/Adult Small size shown on a mannequin with 22.5″ (57 cm) head circumference.
- Newborn: 13” (33 cm) hat circumference x 6” (15 cm) length.
- 0-3 Months: 15” (38 cm) hat circumference x 6” (16 cm) length.
- 3-6 Months: 16” (40.5 cm) hat circumference x 6.5” (16.5 cm) length.
- 6-12 Months: 17” (43 cm) hat circumference x 6.75” (17 cm) length.
- Toddler: 18” (45.5 cm) hat circumference x 7.25” (18.5 cm) length.

Materials
- Herrschners Be-Whirly yarn (100% acrylic, 3.5 oz/100 g, 171 yd/156 m) – 1 skein in Grasslands, or approximately 70 yd (80 yd, 90 yd, 100 yd, 110 yd, 125 yd, 135 yd, 150 yd, 160 yd, 171 yd)/64 m (73 m, 82.5 m, 91.5 m, 100.5 m, 114.5 m, 123.5 m, 137 m, 146.5 m, 156 m) in any bulky weight, marled yarn.
- Denise Interchangeable Love2Crochet Bright US Size I-9/5.5 mm crochet hook, or any size needed to obtain correct gauge.
- Yarn needle.
Gauge
- 8 sts in pattern for Hat Band = 2″ (cm) across. For best fit, always check your gauge.
- 14 dc = 4″ (10 cm) across. For best fit, always check your gauge.

Pattern Instructions
Hat Band (All Sizes)
- Ch 5 (5, 5, 5, 5, 7, 7, 9, 9, 9).
- Row 1: Turn, skip 1 ch, [sc in next st, hdc in next st] across. – (4, 4, 4, 4, 6, 6, 8, 8, 8) sts
- Row 2: Turn, ch 1, starting in first st [sc3L in next st, hdcBL in next st] across.
- Rep Row 2 until Hat Band measures approximately 13″ (15″, 16″, 17″, 18,” 19″, 20″, 21″, 22″, 23″)/33 cm (38 cm, 40.5 cm, 43 cm, 45.5 cm, 48.5 cm, 51 cm, 53.5 cm, 56 cm, 58.5 cm) long, or desired circumference. Do not fasten off.
- Fold Hat Band so that short ends are together, being careful not to twist. Join with slip stitch seam (see Pattern Notes). Do not fasten off.
Pick Up Stitches Along Hat Band (All Sizes)
- Continuing with smaller hook, ch 1, and evenly work 39 (45, 48, 52, 56, 60, 64, 66, 69, 72) sc along circumference of hat (see Pattern Notes), join with sl st to first sc. – 39 (45, 48, 52, 56, 60, 64, 66, 69, 72) sts

- Round 1: Ch 1, dc in first st and each st around, join with sl st to first dc. – 39 (45, 48, 52, 56, 60, 64, 66, 69, 72) sts
