Last year, I got a burst of energy right before I packaged up Christmas gifts for my sister and her husband and decided to make them both stocking caps. The crochet Elf Hat with Ears is the one I made for my sister.

I wanted to get playful with this hat, so rather than the typical make a Santa hat but with green yarn or add stripes, I thought the ears would be a fun addition. My sister and I have pretty small ears (affectionately called elf ears in our youth), so I thought that would be funny, too.

I’ve shared my love of holiday hats before. If you like holiday hats, too, and are looking for stocking caps, check out my other free patterns, shown from left to right. The Slouchy Santa Stocking Cap is available in 10 sizes, the Polar Bear Stocking Cap is available in 10 sizes, and the Feliz Navidad Christmas Tree Hat is available in 10 sizes.

Assembly and Finishing – All Sizes

Assemble Elf Ears

  • Fold base of first Elf Ear (at foundation chain) in half, then fold edges towards the middle so you have 4 layers.
  • Thread yarn needle with CC from chain, whipstitch (see Pattern Notes) layers together. Repeat with second Elf Ear.
  • Fold Hat so that seam on Hat Band is centered at back. Position Elf Ears at corners on front of hat. With yarn needle, join first Elf Ear to Hat as follows: starting at second st from folded corner, whipstitch to unworked front loops on next 2 sts on Round 2, weave yarn through the back of the Elf Ear, weave yarn through st on Round 2 and whipstitch to back of Elf Ear, weave in yarn tails on inside of Hat. Repeat for second Elf Ear.
  • Thread yarn needle with CB from stocking cap tip, whipstitch (see Pattern Notes) tip closed. Weave in yarn tail on inside of hat.
  • With CA, make pompom following instructions on Clover Pom Pom Maker. Alternatively, see Pattern Notes for link to tutorial for making a pompom by hand.
  • Trim pompom.
  • Attach pompom to hat using yarn needle and yarn tail that tied pompom together.
  • With yarn needle, weave in all ends on inside of hat.
